Here it is in early November, and I STILL have not decided on a pattern to make. I have 5 done up in Quilt Design Wizzard and printed out. One thing I keep encounting is I do not find the fabrics I have in my design at the stores. It does not have to match the fabrics from QDW, but it does have to make me happy to look at it. I finally realized this week what I want to make is just a simple 6 inch block. Nothing fancy. No special design, and maybe no design at all. Just a bunch of 6 inch squares in a quilt the size of 30x30 and a simple border and binding. Think scrappy quilt, if you will. I just want to cut fabric and square it up to make a 6 inch block and put the blocks into rows and sew a quilt. As long as it looks good when I lay it out, it should be fine. It took me weeks to decide I do not want a fancy pattern. I do not want to make lots of cuts and have a lot of piecing to do. I want simplicity. Does anyone know of a site where I can print off just an empty quilt so I can play around with colors and use my colored pencils? I do not want to trace a quilt and put in all the boxes. I tried that and it did not work. QDW will not let me print just the quilt boxes with no pattern or fabric chosen. What I would like is a quilt that is made up of 5 to 8 squares wide and 6 to 8 high. Sashing or none is fine. Borders are ok, but not necessary. I just want to play around and see what it is I want to accomplish. I know there are no quilt police. No one is going to come and knock on my door and demand I make the quilt diffferent and so forth, so rest assured that is not bothering me. -- Edited on 11/3/12 6:21 PM -- ------ Quilting is relaxing to me. You can use plain paper with small swatches taped to it & arranged if that is what it means????..... Do you have a color wheel? That shows what colors can go together. Found in art section of craft stores. ....???? Sewing With Nancy had a show on today called Tula's Quilts ... she made up designs that did not need any specific pattern & they were cute...... She did not even have exact measurements when cutting the first strips. I do not know if that would help ... you can watch it online I think...... I would just use graph paper and pencil in a grid to help with colors. Have you thought of using a charm pack? Since they are all the fabrics in any particular line, the dyes and colors all coordinate nicely AND they are pre-cut to a uniform 5" square! ------ Cathryn

The squares are 5 inches and end up at 4 inches. I want them to end up at 6 inches, so less seams to be bothered with. I learned this lesson with my current project and those 3 inch seams. Too many of them. Drove me crazy. I'll get my graph paper out of the drawer and play around. I might end up with something interesting that I want to do. Kitty, It is not so much colors, but I tire of trying to find what I want. I have a couple of collections, so they all go together well. Those are what I want to work with. I understand a color wheel fairly well. I am thinking of taking a Craftsy class on color when it goes on a half priced sale. I can always learn more. ------ Quilting is relaxing to me. If you want the finished block to be 6", cut it at 6 1/2". Why not make a simple 6" block quit in QDW? I know you love to color, check out this book by Carol Ann Waugh, it maybe perfect for you. Look at the used copies since there are a few offered at reasonable prices. In the Simple Blocks, there is none that is just a plain block. The same with the 4 patch, 9 patch and the other ones. I wanted a simple block that was just a square and I can't find one in the program. If you can tell me where to look again, I'll look. I'll look at the book you recommed. Learn, If you want to make a block that is plain with sashing around it then simply get the fabric you want and cut strips the width you want. So for example if you want a plain block at 6 inches then cut 6.5 inch strips from a variety of fabrics. Maybe use a fat quarter bundle and cut as many blocks as you can from each FQ. Then get a tonal matching fabric for the sashing. Maybe consider placing the block on point. You do not really need a program to figure this out. Have never used software for quilts. Use my mind's eye to see how I think it will look. I mostly make things for other people so that usually tells me what colors to use. I think sometimes we become overwhelmed with too many projects we want to do or new techniques we want to try and have a hard time making a choice. ------ quiltingwolf.blogspot.com
