Fierce 15 has very particular taste in clothing: classics with a twist. He prefers high quality fabrics and interesting color combinations/details.

Sooooo....shanghaied, he was in a fabric store with me ( quilt backing for his brother's graduation quilt) when he spied collection of heavy, cozy apparel flannels in spectacular colors. Said he'd love a shirt of said fabrics. We found a pattern. Bought the fabrics and notions.

" Making my new shirts will be so much cheaper than buying!"

Nope.

" What do you mean?"

Even on super sale, the fabric was $7/yd. Each shirt takes 3 yds, allowing for pre- washing/pre-shrinking. Interfacing is $1. Buttons are another $2-$3. Thread is $5/spool. Pattern is labeled $20, but sale is $2. Add our time time spent sewing. This shirt is NOT cheaper than RTW.

However, it will be much higher quality and custom fit vs. Young Men's RTW, even " quality" brands.

"If the better fabrics and buttons are more expensive, how can stores sell clothes so cheap?"

Husband and I explained the Cheap Fashion phenomenon. Boy is now reading on cheap clothing and the effects on the environment, society, economy. And his wallet.

Pre- washing his flannels. We'll sew them together.

I love working with flannels. My next project is to make me a cozy flannel shirt to snuggle inside this winter. I can just imagine the smiles on your young lad's face in his handmade shirt. Cool story.

Bessiemae, I don't know where in OH you live, but if you're anywhere near Berlin in Holmes county, you should try Zinck's. It caters to the Amish, but it's a huge warehouse with a lot of inexpensive but quality flannels, wools, quilting cottons, etc. I bought some luscious flannel for my husband's shirts @ 1.99/yd. They have a web site you can order from, as well.
