Date: 11/5/12 2:57 PM After three days of sorting, Freecycling, recycling, pitching and reorganizing, I am about ready to transform a junk room (which was supposed to be a guest room) into a sewing studio/music room.
I have a big desk-style cabinet for my Bernina Record 830, a 15-91 in a simple walnut cabinet, and an Arrow Gidget table that my portables will take turns sharing.
Now I'm looking for a NARROW table, maximum 18" wide, that is sturdy enough to hold my serger and coverstitch machine. I found this table but haven't determined whether it is too high or if it is sturdy enough.
Any suggestions for a narrow table? IKEA tables are too wide for the room with all the other machines/tables.

Date: 11/5/12 5:17 PM Can you make a table? A solid core door or counter top cut down to 18" depth make a good solid surface for a sewing machine or serger. You can easily lay it across a sturdy file cabinet or other solid cabinet at either end to create the table. ------

Date: 11/5/12 7:16 PM I've thought about this. It's the file cabinet (or cinder block, as one friend suggested) that concerns me if I need to move things around. |

1 member likes this. I made a narrow table, (although it's 22" wide) I have my serger, press and sewing machine on it. I used half of a plain bi-fold door from a home center outlet. I believe they come in different widths.
I put a few coats of varathane on it and used the adjustable legs from Ikea.

Date: 11/6/12 8:06 AM I think this could be sturdy enough, but just in case, you could put a brace on the back. leading from the top edge on one side, leading down to the foot on the opposite side. My sewing machine sits on a desk 27" (it sits in a well at 27", but the desk is 30" high) and that's just fine for me. ------

1 member likes this. I use an Ikea desk that is 24" wide. It's in the Vika series. We bought the longest one and my husband cut it down to size. My desk sits in a nook so the yucky edge isn't a big deal to me, but it can be covered if needed.
How narrow do you need?
ETA: NVM You said you need 18". I think cutting a door or using a piece of thick plywood cut to size would be your best bet. If you do have Ikea near you, you can look in their as is section for shelving or an extra piece that might fit as well.

1 member likes this. Ikea sells a basic tube leg, the ADLIS, and you buy a laminated pine panel from the Home Depot which comes in widths from 16" to 48" and in various lengths for about $12. I have done this several times and currently the knitting machine is on one. |

My sister-in-law surprised me by giving me an 18" deep x 42" wide table --which was originally designed to hold a sewing machine -- for long-term borrow. Both the Kenmore serger and the CoverPro 1000 fit on it nicely.
My studio is almost complete!
