My brother's daughters are 16 and 18 years old. I know one likes dolphins and the other likes horses. Would it be too juvenile to get fabric with dolphins and horses on it to make the Sonoma Swing Bag? It's made by Pink Sand Beach Designs and I already made one (to test it out for gifts).

It says the instructions are easy to understand and fun to sew! That is definitely the truth!

I am pretty sure girls 8 to 10 years old would like that fabric but think maybe it isn't for this other age group. I haven't been that young in forever so...I was wondering if they would be embarrassed to use them or would they love them? Thanks!

I can only speak for my daughters who are 16 and 19. They still like things with fun prints. They both love peace signs and butterfly fabric. My 16yo would LOVE dolphin fabric! I think it kind of depends on the print. If the print doesn't look like a baby's room, I think you would be safe using dolphin and horse fabric!

So if I got whimsical (sp?) fabric (something fun), they would love it? This pattern is cute and I know any age would love it (if they like bags of course). Thanks!

I think whimsical would be perfect. My daughters would love it! And bags, they LOVE bags. Me too, so I understand.

When my daughter and her friends were that age they would have loved such a gift.

If you get nervous about the print you could also line a bag with the 'fun' print...

Have a look at what the girls use for accessories. Very often that is where people of any age will wear a more personally expressive color or print. Chic horse lovers go for an Hermes silk scarf with stirrups! If the clues are positive and you find a good quality print with some sophistication- go for it. I'd consider using the print sparingly/strategically in combination with solids. I like the lining idea. How about a little zipper bag to toss inside for pencils, lip gloss, keys, mad money, etc.

This bag uses 4 prints/solids on the outside. I thought the zipper on the top would be hard but it wasn't at all. It has an outside pocket.

The handle and inside lining can be a different fabric. The pockets on the inside are made from the 4 fabrics. The style is cute for any age group.

I wish I knew the girls better to see what they wore or liked. I only get this info from my mom. I see the girls about every 4 years. They do not live with my brother either. I tried to get info from him but...not exactly what he notices.

I am going to look for the fun fabric and just use one of them - then match up the colors for the other strips. Thank you so much for your help!

Much to my surprise, my almost 14-year-old daughter this morning asked for flannel PJs in a teddy bear print. This from a girl who is very brand conscious and very familiar with big designer names.
