Singer 774 problem with thread

I try to sew a straight seam with the fabric folded and it pulls the material up like it is gathering it. I got it out to see if it works( purchased a good while back and couldn't remember what was wrong with it). Any suggestions?? Appreciate any replies and thanks. Be blessed, Marie ------ ReRe1

But if you buy them, rather than have your SMG buy them and charge a higher price, then give them to the SMG when you take it in for service, it shouldn't cost you much; it takes just a few minutes to do, and he/she has to adjust them anyway for a tuneup. I had to do the same on my 626, with metal feed dogs. The feed dogs literally broke in two (they were that old!) and I couldn't use them; so I bought a set and put it in myself. My 750 has rubber feed dogs but they aren't moving at all. I picked it up last yr I think for $5.00. Which one of these would be the best to get fixed? ------ ReRe1

There are probably a lot of thread goobers in there, preventing the feed dogs from moving; you should have seen the ones in my 778! That machine had NEVER been cleaned! The rubber feed dogs seem to make the machine quieter. The problem with the 774 might still be the feed dogs; they might be worn out--enough that they aren't grabbing the fabric properly. The machine is still moving, which tells me the gears are okay, but I could be wrong. And I believe you can buy rubber feed dogs for this machine; at least the SMG where I got mine asked which set I wanted--metal or rubber. -- Edited on 11/10/12 2:28 AM -- ------ "We don't impose our rhythm on Nature. I'd like to get at least one of them going if not both. I need manuals for them. Need to see if I can locate some free ones online. Which do you think would be the better machine? I have a 600 and a 500a Rockateer. I love the 500. I am letting my daughter use the 600. ------ ReRe1
