Wrinkled Rayon Jersey

This is how I would plan to treat the finished garment I'm making, but now I'm questioning my methods. The fabric has these very fine wrinkles all over it that make it look like it's been crumpled, but it doesn't feel wrinkly, and I can't iron them out. It's just this sort of veiny pattern all over the fabric and it can be seen on both sides. I'm going to just wash it again and maybe put it in the dryer, I guess, but I'm nervous now about rayon and wrinkliness. The fabric is gorgeous but if it's going to be high maintenance, I won't buy more. How do you all treat your rayon, and what setting do you use on your iron to iron it? And how on earth does one effectively iron jersey anyway?! I steam all my rayon/lycra knit finished garments, and they come out beautifully. Really quickly, too. Ironing them doesn't work as well as steaming does. PS; I wash and dry my rayon/lycra knits by machine, and likewise with finished garments, altho I will hang tops now and then. It's one of those fabrics that have progressive shrinkage, and therefore would get progressively smaller otherwise. ------ Marilyn January 2009 to January 2010 81 yards out and 71yards in January 2010 to the present 106.7 yards out and 146.5 yards in. January 2011 to the present: 47 yards out and 69 yards in.

I'll do that this weekend. Lynn, when you say steam it, do you mean with a steamer? I don't have one of those. Can you steam things without a steamer, like by holding the iron over it or next to it and blasting the steam button? I really need to get my pressing situation sorted. Date: 11/9/12 2:36 PM Here's one more vote for washing and drying rayon/lycra knits. I have a virtual wardrobe of tops in wonderful EOS knits. I use cold water delicate wash, and a warm dryer. Sometimes I hang the tops on hangers with good plastic shoulders for the last tiny bit of drying. That's only because I keep reading about heat and lycra not mixing. But I've never had any problems myself with EOS knits made of any fiber. HTH. ETA that I press the seams/hems/necklines on these knit tops during construction with a Naomoto gravity feed steam iron - with great results. The only time I use a pressing cloth is when draping the shoulder seam over a ham to press the seam and then give memory to the shape of the shoulder by letting it cool in place. ETA again because I meant to use the word press where I said iron! -- Edited on 11/9/12 8:02 PM --

Did the fabric arrive with this slight wrinkly pattern or was it smooth before you washed it? I ask because there are knits of this type that are crinkled at the factory (in fact, they pretty common on the market right now). I think you need to contact Linda at emmaonesock and express your worry to her. It might turn out that this was flawed fabric, but maybe it was intended to be this way. I get about 5% shrinkage. I'd suggest mist the fabric lightly and throw it in the dryer for 5min, and remove while hot. Maybe test a swatch first in case your dryer is really hot. ------ Cheap fabrics, like cheap shoes, are a false economy.
