Adding a corset back to a spring dress?
regal80 Intermediate Member since 6/5/12 Posts: 7	Login to reply to this post Like this post Date: 11/11/12 5:30 PM I'm sewing a light lined dress made out of challis for the spring time for a friend of mine, knee length, and it calls for a zipper closure, was thinking I might be able to make it a little more interesting by adding a corset back, but I'm afraid it might be too young (we're both 37), out of style (I never can keep track of what's popular), or just too busy. Opinions?

I love a corset back style, and I'm 39 I wouldn't over-worry about it being in style, it's not like a totally faddy design element. As for being too busy, it depends on the rest of the dress style. Perhaps you can share a link to the dress pattern.

If you had chosen a plain fabric, I'd have thought it would have been too distracting. However, you chose a vintage looking fabric that's busy enough to hold its own with stronger detailing. I'm curious how you plan to go from seamed to corset. I'm assuming you plan to stop the corset lacing at the waist. Will you put an actual waistline in the dress or just go from stitched seam to open with lacing? A lot of rayon fabrics can stretch a lot when pulled on the off-grain. Do you plan to add a stabilizer or something to keep either the front from getting pulled unevenly if pulled snug or the back from drooping if looser. It sounds like an interesting challenge. As for the age concern. I say, "Pshaw." It's a matter of whether any give style is flattering on a persons body type and whether it suits their personality. LOL, if you start worrying too much about age-appropriate in your 30's, you'll be wearing a gray sack in your 50's and a pastel shroud beyond that (you will be told black is too harsh as you age). The pressure to get pushed aside and out of the world of fashion only gets stronger as you get older. Don't start playing into it too soon.....or ever! -- Edited on 11/12/12 6:17 PM --

I was counting on the lining to add some support but it sounds like I might need to take this a little more seriously. I think I might have caused you needless concern. Especially with a panel behind the lacing. I've seen dresses done like you describe. It might even turn out that the give in the fabric makes the whole thing fit more smoothly. Carry on and ignore what I said. :)

Date: 11/13/12 3:28 AM Now that I see the low-cut back of the pattern, I'm worried that the lacing might be too low. It looks like it would be going down to the middle of the rear. Another alternative would be to keep the zip, but add loops above the zipper to the sides of the back straps and use lacing just as a decorative effect.
