Way too small for most anyone, and in poor shape, regardless. But I thought that I might at least post a pic or too

thanks for sharing! I love seeing vintage garments up close and in detail. The seaming on the back is great. What is used for stays? is is whalebone or spiral steel?

I don't know, to be honest. Spiral steel came later, but lightweight spring steel is a possibility. The dressmaker was S. Harrison, of Rochester New York, and it was made for my great great grandmother, Maria Eliza Howe who married Harry B Chase in 1891.

I'm so glad you told us this! I was struggling to imagine your age, if your mom got married in 1891! Let's see, that's 121 years ago, and... yeah. LOL

It is absolutely beautiful. I'd love to see it steamed and hanging on your dress form! What an absolute treasure.

Can you recommend a dress form? It's tiny, with an even tinier waist (20 inches).

You might see if you have a store fixtures supplier in your town. They should have a good selection of things like smaller forms for children's and juniors, or the plastic "half-torso" hangers (like swimsuits come on), like these:

http://www.kc-store-fixtures.com/ladies_plastic_form.php

Since they're only the front half and hollow in back, I've found they fit pretty teeny clothes (like vintage movie costumes--some of those actresses were TINY!) very nicely.

Another option might be a decorative dress form like you sometimes see in gift shops or catalogues. Sometimes you find them at kind of 3/4 size, which might be just about right. If it's too small, you can always pad it up with muslin & quilt batting to support the gown.

But given the heavily corseted shape of a fashionable 1881 body, you probably won't find anything ready-made that is in the proper proportions. The best bet is probably to start much smaller and pad up, using the shape of the bodice as a guide.

You'll enjoy this, though: http://www.metmuseum.org/Collections/search-the-collections/80095790?rpp=20&pg=1&rndkey=20121113&ft=*&deptids=8|62&what=Corsets&who=Corset+Parisien&pos=2 (1881 wedding corset at the Met.)
***
Did you tell us what the gown was made of? It actually looks like it's in pretty nice shape--no stains, no obvious tears... it's just a bit crumpled from being 121! And who isn't?!
