Viking Opal vs. Singer Quantum Stylist 9960 Are they the same?

I'm trying to justify buying the $900 Viking Opal 670 vs. the $320 Singer Quantum Stylist 9960. They look so similar! I am an advanced beginner looking for a good machine that will last me a long time and not outgrow. I mainly sew simple things like dresses for my daughters. Didn't see adjustable foot pressure on either ...might have missed it. Singer has more stitches (600) Opal has 200. And the Singer has more accessories included. Both look like nice machines. I wonder if the feet are interchangable cause they're both made by the same parent company.

You can download the manual from the Viking manuals link someone else posted here on Pattern Reviews and find it there. Not sure about the Quantum Stylist.

It seems that the main differences that I saw were: 1) Viking Opal has adjustable pressure foot pressure. 2) More feet and stitches with the Singer. 3) Potentially better buttonholes with the Opal. 4) Large extension table on the Singer. 5) Automatic bobbin thread pick up on the Opal. I saw some other minor differences that weren't deal breakers either way in my opinion. Are these features plus the Viking name worth the 3X price difference? Part of me feels like I would be paying for the Viking name and that's not reality anymore. Are these new Singers and Vikings going to last like the Swedish made Vikings?

Good question.... for my money probably not... but I don't need 190823987129831 stitches anywaythat's not really my style and neither machine is my cup of tea for the price at this time. Singer has the ONE feature a really miss (presser foot pressure) and the Opal is just too expensive considering I don't need 128979281347918 stitches. TO EACH THEIR OWN!!!

I bought it mainly to take to retreats & quilting classes as there is no way I'd haul my big Janome Horizon anywhere, and, I do not like the little Jem size machines that are so lightweight. The Singer fit the bill for me. I purchased from Amazon and have not been disappointed. Now, if you're looking for a really great machine keep a permanent Ebay search for the Pfaff 6000 series of Tiptronics & Tipmatics, they were made in Germany. I just purchased a Tipmatic 6122 last week for $270, it arrived yesterday - I LOVE it! I had a Pfaff 1475 for years and sold it when I purchased the Janome Horizon this past spring - MISTAKE! I missed the Pfaff IDT so much, and nothing makes a great stitch like the older Vikings (ones made in Germany) Now the Tipmatic isn't fancy schmancy but it has plenty of stitches to do most any type of sewing. It even drops the feed dogs for free motion quilting! It is a mechanical machine = not as many technical problems or 'fussy' issues like a lot of the newer electronic/computer machines. It just purrs! It has the IDT feature which Pfaffs are known for. Anyhoo, now that I've written a book I'll stop! I LOVE IT!! I'm doing some Christmas ornaments and wanted to personalize them with names and date. This machine is doing a beautiful job. These are the quick samples I did with a few of the options. My favorite and the one I'm going to use is the "block" style: James and Miss Vandenberg sample. The script was nice but I don't want to have to trim a bunch of small jump stitches. The straight/plain (top sample AJames) one is also nice, but I wanted something a little fancier.
