My husband wants to buy me a new [to me] sewing/embroidery machine for Christmas. He found this Bernina 200 upgraded to a 730 on eBay and it ends in a few hours. From what I have read, this is an excellent machine. However, I have no idea how much it should cost used, especially with the upgrades. The idea of spending this much on a sewing machine scares me so I want to make sure we are getting a good, or at least decent, deal. Please let me know whether you think this is a reasonable price for this machine. Also, I would appreciate your overall thoughts or reviews on this machine and whether you think this is a good investment or if our money would best be spent else where. Thanks in advance for your help!

the Bernina

I posted your link for you for a visual for others to help you.

I am a Quilter at heart. I love to play with fabrics, patterns and colors. Recently I have discovered I enjoy doing applique. I love making pictures. Using a sewing machine is much easier than counted cross stitch or oil painting for me. I enjoy landscape quilting as well. I am working on my first applique project in the spring of 2014.

I think the price is okay. However, before buying a computerized machine on EBay, I'd want to know the following:

1. Did the buyer have an authorized Bernina dealer service it prior to selling? The answer needs to be yes, and you want to see a copy of the ticket.
2. A picture of the machine powered on.
3. How many stitches, sewing and embroidery are on it, and how many "on" hours.
4. And last, but pretty important in my opinion, would be to ask if the machine has always been kept on at minimum, a surge protector.

I keep all my computerized machines on an APC surge protector with a voltage regulator.

What CJ said - these are the same things I demand if buying used. Lucky you are picking it up. See if you can get the original boxes.
Having the BSR is good, as is the suitcase system - you can always sell that off if you don't use it. Plexiglass table same.

I have a 730 and LOVE my machine! $2500 is a fair price.

Thanks for the info. One more question, if I were to find a Bernina 200, do you know how much the upgrade to make it a 730 would cost apporximately?

What about warranty..can it be used for a 2nd owner ?

These machines can be very expensive to fix without warranty.

I can't remember the exact amount I've read, but it's around $1,000 I think if the dealer can still get the upgrade. It's been discussed here before. Maybe do a message search. Better yet, call a Bernina dealer and ask. The BSR alone is $899 MSRP and I think the upgrade made it possible to be able to use the BSR. Someone please correct me if I am wrong!
