Best older serger for heavier fabrics
Looking for serger recommendations for mostly heavy fabric

I am shopping for a used serger and am mostly drawn to the older Viking and Pfaff models, since I have good experiences with older standard sewing machines of these makes. I expect to be spending more time on heavier fabrics (canvas and upholstery) and fleece than on lightweight fabrics, though would not want to give up the ability to sew lightweights also. I tend to get carried away wanting ever feature imaginable just in case. I have used sergers before, but only low end models and in very simple ways (basic flatlock and overlock stitches on 3-thread machines). I would appreciate any recommendations. I have particularly been looking at the Pfaff 788 and older coverlocks, as well as the Huskylock 936 and 1001/1002. Am I headed in the right direction? Thanks!

What's your $ budget...that help others provide some models for you.

I personally own the JUKI MO735 and have no problems sewing Denim.

I'd probably like to spend less than $400 (but $300 would be good). For that, I can get something new that would probably be OK....I know the Janome Magnolia is that price, but just doesn't seem very interesting. Of course, for the right machine I would spend more - I had originally thought about buying a new Janome for about $700...

I feel personally quite capable of answering this question since I own the Viking 936 and the Pfaff 4874. The 4874 is a 10 thread do everything machine. A couple of years ago a friend of mine asked me to make 40 ponchos out of thick blankets he bought at Bed Bath and Beyond. My Viking 936 won this battle hands down. The 4874 does a beautiful stitch and is good on denim but it really struggled with the blankets. This is where my ruler business started because this friend knew how to find me a company that could cut the ruler acrylic for a reasonable cost. (yay)

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense. I will be using it to do some boat canvas and sail fabric things, so not quite as heavy as blankets, but ponchos sound like a great project, and maybe a bit like heavy fleece to sew. Sounds like the Pfaff is more about style and the Husky more of a workhorse?

Viking 910 is also a real workhorse.

The Viking 905 is the same as the 910 without the electronic screen.

My grandmother taught me to sew when I was 10, and I've been sewing ever since.
