1 member likes this. Date: 11/17/12 6:23 PM I have a mattress that needs replacing. I've started having leg/hip stiffness and pain in the night and in the morning, and I thought it was just because of the mattress. So I've been sleeping the last few nights in my adult daughter's old bed (her mattress was only a year old when she moved away several years ago). The first night I slept quite a bit better than on my own mattress, but now I'm getting some pain and stiffness sleeping on it, too. It's harder than my mattress, so maybe this is the problem.
Has anyone had leg/hip stiffness and pain in the night, and did it turn out to be arthritis more than just a mattress issue?

Date: 11/17/12 7:56 PM I don't know if it could be a circulatory issue or not, but recently I purchased a Restonic pillow top mattress and have gotten the best night's sleep I've ever had. Before, it was my knees and outside leg. But that doesn't bother me anymore. Might have been the mattress as I'm a side sleeper. ------ "We don't impose our rhythm on Nature. For years I had a firm mattress until the last 2 years. Having a firm mattress is the old school of thought.
When you lay down your spine and neck have natural curves
and a hard firm mattress is not good.It doesn't form to your body/spine at all.
My mattress was so expensive (king size) and didn't want to pay/buy a new one. So what I did was buy some foam to be laid on top of mattress. I bought a 3" topper and it really helped.
Too soft is no good either..you don't want that sunken feeling . You want just enough to curve with your spine when sleeping.
I also have a pillow that keeps my neck aligned with my spine.
If you do decide to get some foam topper be sure to stay away from the cheap stuff..you want the ones that have high density.
Whatever your problem is ...mattress or arthritis the foam will help relieve some pain.
By the way..Foam works best when on top of firm mattress . Foam on top of soft mattress not so good because you end up sinking in hole which takes back/neck out of alignment.

Date: 11/17/12 8:20 PM I've had hip pain on one side during the night ever since my daughter was born (she's now ten, I'm fifty). I've had it checked out by two GPs, and neither said anything about arthritis, though both thought it was a muscle problem. Some nights the side of my knee that I'm sleeping on (side sleeper here) hurts, as well. Massage has definitely helped, as have limbering exercises for that hip before bed.
I used to sleep on a hard mattress, but it became like doing penance after this hip issue arose. My husband and I paid big bucks for a soft, cushy pillowtop several years ago, and I am much more comfortable. But it was expensive. HUUUGE difference, heavenly really, but your body may vary. Some swear by the hard mattresses, others by the soft.
Incidentally, the first few nights we slept on the new bed we were scared that we'd made an enormous, expensive mistake. It felt like being on a water bed compared to our old hard mattress, and every time my husband turned over I felt it on my side. We called to see if we could return it -- nope. But after a few weeks we would not have parted with it for anything. ------ marjoriekh |

Date: 11/17/12 10:05 PM I too have been having problems.. now also involved are my shoulders. DH has sciatica too & he keeps saying it is the mattress aggravating both of us .....though ours is only 4 or 5 years old. .... We have put the heated mattress pad back on for winter & it does help feel a little relief with heat .
It is a very good topic. Thank you for posting. ------ I am a gal from Kalamazoo.... oh what a gal... smile.... It is in Michigan... la la la ...love that Glen Miller classic!

Date: 11/17/12 10:37 PM I was having the hip and back aches too in the mornings on a very hard old mattress. Mine wasn't lower back - it was the entire back! And definitely muscular in nature.
We bought a Stearns and Foster medium mattress as to the hard/soft thing. It is one of those designed where you don't feel the other person move as much. That is true to an extent, and it's more comfortable.
If I didn't get so hot at night, I'd have insisted on a Memory Foam mattress. But, they do get hot. I've heard those are great for arthritis.
The new mattress is good, but occasionally I do wake up with the stiffness still. I think it's a result of not moving enough at night. Sometimes DH hogs the bed and I don't get to move enough! ------ Bernina 730E, 530, and 350PE

He's been too cheap to buy a new mattress since he is 6'2" tall, he needs a cal king. Finally tonight I got him to the store and we have a mattress picked out. I just have to see if I need to buy a new foundation, and then it will be delivered before Christmas! I can hardly wait.

Try a latex mattress or one with a latex topper (assuming that you don't have a latex allergy.) We've had one for several years, and it's the most comfortable mattress we've owned. Firm, but soft at the same time. |

1 member likes this. Date: 11/18/12 6:15 PM I had the most shocking back pain, shoulder pain and numbness down the arm I was sleeping on (no matter which side I tried), and neck trouble. It was immediately allieviated with a new mattress. We concluded the old one actualy collapsed and compressed so badly that it was cutting off blood supply to limbs and was no longer providing countoured support for an already dodgy back. It was old, and worn out.
So we hunted and hunted and went for a fully sprung with steel coils mattress topped with a thick gel/rubbery stuff overlay, it is honeycomb shaped hospital grade pressure relieving stuff, breathes brilliantly and is superbly warm in winter but cool in summer. It is not memory foam. I keep hearing about that stuff that it compresses within a year or two and then loses its capability to recover, and compresses hard so it no longer contours to the body. The gel stuff is supposed to last indefinately and will probably outlive the springs life expectancy.
Our new matress is brilliant. I have never slept so well. Hubby had developed back problems for the first time in his life with the old mattress but that disappearerd totally with the new one. Existing back problems I have are no longer irritated by the mattress. The numbness disappeared immediately. I sleep like a rock now! It was horribly expensive, but worth every cent to be able to sleep soundly and not be woken regularly with discomfort, and to not be really stiff and sore after a night's restless sleep.
Dont underestimate how bad for your health a bad mattress is. ------ Quilting up a storm
