Mccalls 6664, getting the decorative band to lay flat

I've been working on Mccalls 6664 in view B. I have it almost done and am at the step where you put on the band with the button. The band is made of your fashion fabric, with a backing of lining fabric. I'm using a fairly lightweight wool as the fashion fabric, and a scrap of bemberg or something like that for the lining.

It seems that no matter what I do, I cannot get the band to lay flat around the hat. You are to hand tack it on once the hat is completely made, overlap the ends and then sew on button. The band has some shaping built into pattern, but no matter what I do, it's not laying right. What I need to do is to put the hat on my head, and then stitch it on so I can make sure it's laying right. That's pretty much impossible though. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!

Have you thought of a upside down bowl to fit the hat? I use bowls when I wash my hand-felted hats. True, i have to put the bowl on a stand so the hat hangs down, but that is easy to do-I use a thermos bottle to perch the bowl. I works for me.

I had not thought of that!!!!! I'm going to give it a try. My husband is going to laugh his head off when he sees me trying my hat on our different bowls. Thanks for the tip - that's exactly what I was looking for!

The bowl idea is brilliant!

I made a vogue hat similar to yours. I had great difficulty getting the band to lay flat. I used a rolled up towel to fill out the hat while sewing, that helped, but eventually I had to remake my band out of a bias strip so that I could ease the top and bottom of the band smoothly around the hat.
