Date: 11/19/12 11:29 AM The hello kitty post got me thinking again about wanting a small machine for my boys who have both shown interest in sewing w/ momma. I'd LOVE the green hello kitty and I think they would actually be amused by it. They know there is a whole HK thing with me (short version, I have a chococat tattoo and whole family buys me HK stuff, but it started as a joke and is now a "thing" wether I want it to be or not) so they will like that aspect.
However, if I buy a smaller machine i'd like one with the overedge SS because I sew knits almost exclusively and occasionally we travel to chicago to see family and it seems i often bring my SM. End up sewing last minute gifts etc.
So having a smaller lighter machine I can use would be great for those times!
is there any baby sized machines with the overedge? ------ Shan - Incredibly nerdy mom to 2 boys Corran (8) and Quinn (5)

Date: 11/19/12 12:24 PM When knits first became available for home sewing we use a narrow zigzag stitch for stretch.
Knits usually do not ravel, so the overcast would not be necessary
Try a few settings to see what you like.
You may not need a special foot or different sewing machine.
This is what an overcast foot looks like.

Date: 11/19/12 1:02 PM You might want to take a look at the Janome 128 sold at Hancock Fabrics. I have its predecessor, the H107 and I believe it has a stretch stitch. It's a 3/4 size machine, but is sturdy, sews well and good for beginners. I'm not sure about the 128, but on my machine, the stitches are pretty much preset. I think they use standard Janome feet and bobbins. Hancocks will generally have these smaller machines (128, H107, etc.) on sale on Black Friday for around $70.00. ------ Cynthia

Date: 11/19/12 11:29 PM You might want to look at the Janome Jems. You can usually find them on eBay.

Date: 11/20/12 3:26 PM yeah, I know I can do a straight + zigzag or really tight zigzag, but to be honest it's a big enough pain to do a pass and trim...which is what I do now.
adding two passes of sewing into the mix....blech! lol.
I'll check those out! ------ Shan - Incredibly nerdy mom to 2 boys Corran (8) and Quinn (5)

Thats the one I typically use. Looks like the janome128 is identical to the green hellokitty. interesting!
seems like both the Gem and HK/128 options don't have that particular stitch, but have workable stitches. hmmm.... ------ Shan - Incredibly nerdy mom to 2 boys Corran (8) and Quinn (5)
