Date: 11/20/12 1:21 PM I have been trying for a week now on this whole crocheting a hat for the grandkids. I was able to finally get guage and made it to the directions to fit my head. But, when I tried it on it feels tight. I re-measured the guage and it was dead on. I measured my head which is 21.5 inches across and the finished diameter of the hat is 8 inches. When I look at some of the hat sizing charts it sounds like 8" is right. but I also have read where the hat is to be 1-2 inches smaller than what the head measures. Which would be 9.5" which is like what the hat I have measures. So my problem is how do I adjust the pattern? do I increase the stitches in each round and by how much? The grandkids range in 2 weeks to 11 yrs. old so I really need a good and trusted rule. |

Date: 11/28/12 8:12 AM I can crochet, but I'm not very good at it, but I'll have a go!
So, your head diameter is 21.5", and the hat is 16"? Did you measure the hat on the inside? With a bulky yarn there can be a large difference between the inside and outside diameter. Either way, a hat that fits you should be about 19", so 16" is quite small.
I am assuming that you start off by crocheting a foundation chain? If so, take the number of chain stitches, divide by 16 and multiply by 19. Then you need to kind of bodge the decreasing to make it fit into the hat pattern. It may be worth asking if the grandkids like their hats tight on their head, or loose? This would affect the size you are aiming for. Finally, it might be worth measuring the kids heads. I measured my kids last year, one was 21" (7 yo) and one was 19" (6 yo). ------ Reading from Europe |

Date: 11/30/12 11:59 AM Thanks for the reply and your measurements. I have spent endless hours on the internet finding charts to tell me approximately what kids heads are. Of course, I'm finding they all vary a little. I wanted to make these as a surprise gift. I did ask the daughter-in-law what her kids heads were because, well, they have big heads. She never got back to me and I never asked again because I want them to be a surprise and well I'm just going to do an average to bigger size according to the chart. If they are a little big it's better than too tight.
