this whole subject confuses me. I've seen ones that you can program and they run on their own, ones that you actually guide yourself. Ones you can use basically any sewing machine with. and it would seam they really range in price. I had toyed with the idea of getting the John Flynn frame at one time but heard it was difficult to get the sandwich on it and it was rather cumbersome. Can someone give me the basics or guide me to a website that does.TIA

There is a video that is quite long on the flynn website -- have you been able to find that?

He loads and quilts nearly a whole quilt on that video.

I keep thinking about getting some kind of "thing" to use with my grand quilter - Ive thought about a little grace frame -- but, I dont even know if it would fit in my house - and the "loading" part might just drive me crazy.

There are computer driven programs that can "add on" to even small machines like the grand quilter to turn it into a automatic quilter.

I like the cheaper long arms - cuz Im both cheap and poor - there is a brand called the "homesteader" that is pretty cheap - its basic - but - basic is not bad.

Other than looking online I dont have personal experience with long arms. I do watch lots of videos online - Ive watched a few seasons of "quilt it" and a few seasons of other long arm quilting shows.

I am looking forward to using my aunts long arm at some point - but thats really all the information I have.

lol I'm poor and cheap also. I've seen some of these priced at 12k. Right now nether the room or the monies for one but they do intrigue me.

If I remember -- and I might not be remembering right - the homesteader was around 3000.00 -- and I think a frame for the grand quilter I have was about 1000.00 -- I think the Pfaff dealer said that 18.8 with a table was 7000 at their store. But, they can be high in comparison to what i hear from others around the country on Pfaff prices.

They can range anywhere from "make it yourself to over $30k.

If money is an issue, take a look at some frames. Both APQS and Handiquilter use the same style, which is pretty simple and could be contrusted yourself. Actually HQ used to make a frame that was inexpensive and could be mounted to any table/bench surface, not sure if they still make it or not.

As for the machine head, well pretty much anthing will work. price dictates bells and whistles. You could mount a Singer 15-91 if youo wanted.

I thought some of the prices could be over 30,000 -- but sometimes what I think I remember and what is real are two different things.

I think the auto advancing roller system is one of the cooler things on some of the more pricey machines.

When I first thought about long arms I thought that there was no work involved -- Ive learned by watching videos that, there is still lots of work involved -- just a different kind of work than with FMQ at home.

Knowing me, I would get the quilt, the batting or the backing on crooked every time.

don't think there is one in my future, too expensive, too time consuming and like I said no room. Will just have to get better at my free motion skills and cheat using the embroidery machine.
