Hopefully this is in the right place, let me know if it's not.

I have this pants pattern that calls for facings. It has 2 darts at the front, 2 darts at the back (pretty standard, I would imagine). I'd like to make the pants with a waistband, rather than have facings. How can I adapt the pattern? Do I chop off the top by the height of the waistband (thereby shortening the darts)? Do I shorten it somewhere above the crotch line (to keep the darts as they are)? Those are the two options I see, are there others? I tried to search on the web, and had no luck, so if anybody knows anything, I'll be very grateful!

Many thanks in advance!

Others may be more qualified to answer this, but I think it makes a difference whether the original pattern is meant to fit at the waist or below. If it is meant to fit at the waist I would think that you could just add a straight waistband to the top of the pant. If it is meant to sit below the waist and you want to add a waistband it would need to be a contour one to fit your below-the-waist curve.

In my previous post I had assumed that you wanted to add a waistband to the top of the pants. On the other hand if you don't want to change where the pants sit, you could cut off part from the top, thereby shortening the darts; however in this case the waistband which you add would need to be contoured to replicate the portion of the darts which you had eliminated.

Brine is correct. If this falls at your waist or even slightly below a straight band can easily be added. If you want a contour waistband you measure down the depth you want, say 1 1/2" and cut it off. Add sas to the pant edge. Fold up the darts on the band section, smoothing curve out and add sas. Make a muslin of the band stay taping the waist edge and try it on.

Brine & Nancy, thank you so much. Now that you've explained it, it seems a lot less daunting! I'm gonna give it a go with both styles of waistbands. Thanks again!
