I have limited experience sewing with knits, but now have a serger and have done some experimenting.

I want to make some knit tops, specifically ones to wear under jumpers or jackets. So I'd like fairly thin, smooth or slippery knits suitable for tops, maybe with a cowl neck. (Not cotton interlock for this purpose.) I need white or ivory to go with my jumpers and jackets, and it needs to be reasonably opaque.

I have a very limited selection of knits locally, so I'd like to try online but I have no idea what such a fabric is called or where to buy it. Any ideas?

(I previously posted this in the wrong forum. Sorry for the double post.)

An ITY jersey might work well for you. Spandex World has all the basic colors here. I have ordered from Spandex World and the service and fabric quality have been very good. The will send you swatches if you want.

A good description of ITY is on this page at Emma One Sock.

FabricMart has a large selection of ITY in solid colors (prints too) at $5.99 a yard. The ones I've purchased have been very good quality.

Nancy's Notions has a very good selection of high quality ITY knits ( Brazil Knit) and .rayon/lycra knits manufactured by the well regarded Canadian company, Telio, and you can order 1/8 yard samples beforehand. Here is the code for free shipping with no minimum purchase required. This coupon is good as many times as you'd to use it through 12/27/12 (125414-2199. Other free shipping coupons for Nancy's Notions are listed on Retailmenot.com.

Thank you all for your ideas. It gives me some confidence to try some of these fabrics. I'm choosing a couple of the lowest priced ones to start with. Just placed an online order too!

nancy2001, That is terrific information. Thank you so much!! I am trying to buy from the US and Canada, with some European countries thrown in. Thank you VERY much.
