Hi,

I found a Brother Project Runway SM on the United Airlines Rewards site. It does not provide a model number, but from the VERY brief description, I believe it to be the XR9500PRW. Unfortunately, I assumed this to be the same as the XR9000 that has been reviewed positively on this site. My mom has ordered the machine for me and now I see it is NOT the same as the 9000. It appears to have more features such as stitches, but one reason I wanted a more advanced machine than I have (Janome Jem Gold 2) is because I wanted adjustable stitch length/width. Oddly, it seems the less-featured 9000 has that, but from what I can tell, the 9500PRW does not.

Does anybody have this machine or has anyone tried it? I'm a very novice sewer, having just finished my 3rd project from a pattern. But I did do all 3 projects in a month! I'm excited to sew, but I want the options that my Janome does not have.

Please tell me this machine was a good idea! (it's my bday present).

I don't have this machine, but since I was looking at Brother machines, I checked this one out. It is so hard to get the details sometimes isn't it.

Have your received the machine yet? I am hoping it does have adjustable stitch width/length because otherwise it sounds very nice. I honestly have to believe it is adjustable. That is such a basic requirement of sewing afterall.

Lots of good reviews, the bad ones were complaints about thick fabrics, quilting (which probably could be fixed by using a walking foot).

Good luck and let us know what you think

eta: wanted to mention after reading the few bad reviews -- nothing fixes sewing machine problems like a fresh, new needle.

Hi Kathy,

I just got my machine today. Took forever! I literally started messing with it about 30 mins ago, and I'm already kind of blown away. Granted, I have little to compare it to- I've been using my Janome Jem Gold 2 which is very basic, and other than that, past machine experience has been very limited but always with very old kenmores and the like which had NO bells and whistles.
First off- it does seem kind of cheap, as it's mostly plastic. Compared to my Janome, this feels like it could easily break. I don't like that.
BUT wow, it IS quiet. And having never worked with a computerized machine, I had no idea what even a basic level machine like this was capable of.
The decorative stitches are super cool to someone like me who has never used a machine with such a function. And while the monogram function is really rudimentary- only one very basic font and the letters are quite small, I still think it's fun. More novelty that anything. I don't know what I'd use it for, honestly, but I like that it's there.
I really like the fancy stitches. And that the machine comes with 7 different presser feet. I had to go buy a zipper foot for my Janome...It also comes with an extended table thing, which I think is great EXCEPT that it doesn't appear to be very stable. Not sure how well it'll hold up.
And it also has the option to use the start/stop button to sew without using the foot pedal. I'm glad I read review on Amazon, as otherwise I'd not have known that you can't use the button if the foot pedal is plugged in. The instructional video failed to mention that.
And finally, yes, the stitch length and width ARE adjustable. And what I really like is that the LED stitch selector tells you which foot to use for the stitch chosen.
I think this machine is going to be a lot of fun!

That machine looks very much like my SG9000, except yours has more stitches. I've had mine for almost two years now and have had no problems. According to the specs, yours weighs 19 pounds and mine is 9.8 so they are probably the same grade of plastic Yes, the additional table does feel flimsy, but it worked fine when I did a small quilt on it.

As for the monogram function, I used to work with a woman that had all of her shirts monogrammed. She paid a ton of money for that and the size was the same as ours! I'm planning on using it for quilt labels..and one of these days I'll will do "back" on the rear waistbands of my elastic waist pants.

Have fun with your new machine. I have had quite a few Brothers and I do enjoy them and have had no problems, in spite of the low cost.

MaterialGirl...the stitch length on mine for the basic straight stitch goes from 0.2 to 5.0...I usually use 4.0-4.5 for basting and have no problems pulling them out if that is the info you needed.

Got a Manual?

The reason the fonts are small is because you have a sewing machine and not an embroidery machine.

Hi Patti Ann,
Yes, I have a manual, it came with the machine. But thanks for the link.

And yeah, I wasn't expecting much in terms of the monogram function, especially since I'd already read that it was small and unexciting, but for me and my background of very basic machines, it's pretty cool.
