What is the main difference between the Bernina 630 and 440? If I do not want the machine for embroidery, what does the 630 offer that the 440 does not have?

Thanks!!

Color screen, more stitches, and I love my 630. I thoght about buying a 450, but decided I liked the new interface of the 630 and those knobs so much better. The width and length knobs make all the difference. This machine is so sweet.

I really enjoy quilting. I love to play with fabrics, colors and pictures. I recently discovered how much fun applique can be. As I love making pictures, landscape quilting can be challenging, but seeing the picture come to life is so rewarding.

I had both machines and the 630 is, IMO, a better machine. You get a color touch screen, stitch animation, more stitches. I noticed a difference in the quality of the buttonholes. By the way, the 630 is much easier to do buttonholes since you hold the button up to the screen and use the multifunction knob to get it's size. Much easier than having to measure for the 440's buttonholes.

Not that the 440 is not a great machine. It is. If I had the choice, I would buy the 630 without question.

My 635LE Review. The 635 is the exact same machine as the 630 except for the face plate and embroidery designs. I never did do a review on the 440 since I had it one month before trading up to the 635.

Agreed. I have both. Stitch animation, the smooth-action knobs to adjust stitch width and length, the color screen, more stitches, ability to zig-zag in BSR are all 630 advantages. I loved the 440, but the 630 is really a cut above.

I don't do machine embroidery at all, but the 630 is better for that also. The 440 has to be plugged into a computer, but the 630 can take designs off a USB and embroidery without being connected.

I do think the stitch quality, feed, feel, power, etc are the same.

I have the 635, same as the 630. Love it and wrote a review last year on PR.
The 440 is also a great machine, but I like the colored screen, and the bit more of everything the 635 has, Plus I did buy the embroidery mod.(which I was not interested in originally and chose the 635 over the 440 anyway. I changed the face on it as you can do this on the 630/35. I haven't check lately if this is still offered.

I also vote for the 630 - I never had a 440 but have a 165 and it's screen is black and white. I still love that machine but using I'm reminded of the big difference between the two.

They're both fantastic machines, I have the 630 and the 430, and previously owned a 440 (dearly regret selling it). If price isn't an issue, by all means opt for the 630, although quite honestly if you never intend to do any embroidery I don't know that the extra features are really worth the extra price, although they are very nice to have. But if you're not interested in embroidery, you should probably compare the 430 and the 630.

Probably the biggest feature difference is built in embroidery, security function, color screen, and personal program.

The 440 is a discontinued machine if that makes a difference. Doesn't the 635 have a wider stitch width as well?

The 630/630 is also discontinued. They are 5.5mm.

I am more of a button person and actually prefer my 440. I can see at a glance what I am looking for without having to drill down through the software. I also have a 185, a former TOL, and find drilling down through the layers on the touch screen a bit of a pain.
The measuring of the button for buttonholes is nice though.
