alternative to adobe pdf. software

Maybe the Adobe is not compatible with my XP, or maybe I am just a pdf dolt, but I cannot make that Adobe Reader Acrobat software work properly. I have done all the reinstalls, etc., but no joy. There are so many forms online that need a pdf program. And also for business, companies like to send pdf documents, which sometimes I can open and print, and sometimes not. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
