Date: 11/30/12 10:03 AM My mother has a 158.19801 and I LOVE it. I have been watching ebay for one and there are alot shown with different model numbers but look exactly the same except for two buttons on top I don't think I ever used. (I worked with Mom's machine since she got it so I know every mark and button) I have always wanted one and now that I want to start sewing more I would like one for my arsonal, that thing can bang through anything!!
Example....there is one on now that is 158.18800 and it looks exactly the same execpt for the foot pedal.
I am wonder what the differences are?? Maybe someone could direct me to some sites that could help me otherwise??

Date: 11/30/12 9:46 PM HI Neaner. I have a 158.17860. It has a super high shank and cams. It was TOL in its day. It will sew anything woven-not knits. I fought with it for years to sew a knit and it refuses. I gave up. I have a serger and a Janome that don't mind knits. I bought every foot for it except the walking foot and the ruffler-both of which I wish I had and both of which are extremely expensive (if I can even find them). If I had bought the walking foot I might have had a chance sewing knits. The buttonholer is awesome. It sounds like the models you are looking at are probably the generation after mine. My mom had one that looked like mine but did fewer stitches and did not take cams; it wasn't super high shank either.
Each model was a little different but all are awesome stitchers and very dependable. I hope you find one that you like. I would look on craigs list. I have seen them there for about $50 in my area and often in a nice table. Mine is in a case not in a table. I was on that yahoo group for awhile. Lots of good info.! Good luck in your search! |

Date: 12/1/12 10:34 AM I like to make myown curtains and my mom's(1980) can go through heavy fabrics like it's paper. I grew up on a dairy farm and patched alot of jeans in my day,LOL.
So instead of waiting to have hers I have always wanted one for myself because I would like to make more home decor stuff. I have an older Brother that struggles through heavy fabrics but it is a good machine. I have a newer Kenmore/Janome that doesn't impress me as much as I thought it would.
I look through Crlist daily and haven't seen anything up here. I think the gals that do own those good machines hang on to them till they take their last breath like mom. That is my dream machine.

Date: 12/1/12 3:56 PM Jeannine, curtains and other home dec stuff is mostly what I use mine for now too. I bought mine in 1980 on clearance so your mom's is the next generation. I know I would never ever sell mine. It will keep going when my new machine has died. They are hard to beat. My Janome 6600 though has come very close. I hope you do find one-keep looking. One will come up as there were so many of them sold.  |
