With my brother - I used prewound bobbins. My new (craigslist) bernina 180 manual doesn't say poop about the embroidery bobbin... and since they are metal bobbins specific to the machine - I don't know what to try! Help!! I wanna give'her a whirl and decide whether or not to keep or my brother (which is driving me batty with tensions!)

These use the bobbins you would use with this machine for anything else. They use the rotary bobbin case with the pigtail. My 580 came with both bobbins but I'm sure you can get one from a dealer if needed.

All I know is that I do not use pre-wounds on my Bernina 730. I think there are some out there that do work, but my dealer didn't recommend it, and I never wanted to take the chance. I don't mind winding a bunch at a time up - it's very fast and saves money over the pre-wounds. I hated the waste when I had a Brother machine and used them. I was considering winding my own before I sold it.

I've been doing machine embroidery for 11 years and have never used prewound bobbins.

OK -so good news is I don't need anything new The lady I bought it from told me about the bobbin with a gold something or another that I pull thru... so I'll find that in my pack. BUT WHAT THREAD do you guys use on the bottom? I was under the impression that pre-wound bobbins were different thread? Strong but thin or something... Thanks ladies!!

any thread that I can pick up at Joanns? I do have a local sewing store but she's not Bernina. She does sell babylock (although I didn't buy mine from her! Not the best store...) but I bet I can go grab something there!
I just don't know what I'm looking for since I always used pre-wound bobbins! LOL

Sulky makes a bobbin thread that I have used and been happy with. You might be able to pick it up at Joann's. My favorite for bobbin thread is Bottom Line by Superior, absolutely no lint and very fine.

Pfaff Performance 5, a few Berninas, several vintage multiple manufacturers. Love all my machines!
