I am attempting to make the BWOF 12-2009 141 jacket for my son. He is 5'7' and has a chest measurement of 32 inches. He needs the size 170 to for his length, but the 156 size for his slim build. With the multisize pattern sheet I can trace this accordingly. However I am unsure which armhole depth to use. with his slender frame and arms, I am afraid tracing the armhole depth for the 170 will throw off the fit, but I am also concerned that tracing the shorter armhole of the 156 will look odd given the length of the jacket. Would you split the different and trace the 164 armhole depth and corresponding sleeve head? Any advice would be appreciated.

You could have an idea, what to choose. Let him take a piece of soft cardboard or plastic under his arm as high as possible . it should be in a horizontal position. Than you bend that piece towards the back and than you can measure from that point vertical up to the shoulder. This must give you an idea about the armhole depth

You may get differing opinions on this and I haven't seen the pattern, but I would go with the 156 and then lengthen that pattern according to his needs.

You will need to add the extra length specifically where he needs it to match up with the pattern - that may be in the armhole depth (or not) as well as above and below the waist. That's how I would make sure the jacket fit his proportions properly.

HTH!
