Unsure which size to use

I am attempting to make the BWOF 12-2009 141 jacket for my son. He is 5'7' and has a chest measurement of 32 inches. He needs the size 170 to for his length, but the 156 size for his slim build. With the multisize pattern sheet I can trace this accordingly. However I am unsure which armhole depth to use. with his slender frame and arms, I am afraid tracing the armhole depth for the 170 will throw off the fit, but I am also concerned that tracing the shorter armhole of the 156 will look odd given the length of the jacket. Would you split the different and trace the 164 armhole depth and corresponding sleeve head? Any advice would be appreciated.

Perhaps measure the armhole depth of something which fits would work. Otherwise, I would trace the 170, make a muslin to check fit & go from there.

Thanks Julia. I would love to measure a jacket that fits him but he doesn't have one that fits him properly. I can't buy anything for him at the proper length that doesn't swallow him. I think I will go the muslin route.

I would use the 156 and lengthen. That's what I do for my 6'1" size 10 daughter. I have to lengthen above and below the waist and above and below the elbow but I haven't had any problems with the sleeve.
