Joann's flannel shirting? is it any good?

It's a great price - espeically if I'm considering making 3 sets of pajamas! But most JA fabrics don't wear very well. Anyone have experience with these? ------ Melanie

Date: 12/7/12 1:46 PM The flannel I bought there wasn't worth bringing home; it had no loft and was very thin and coarse. It would not provide any warmth. Date: 12/7/12 1:53 PM I don't know if it was their shirting flannel- but I've made my DH pajamas out of the flannel they always put on sale for Black Friday (he gets a new pair every year) and he now has 5 pairs that he wears each winter. They have held up well, but the Marc Jacobs flannel I got from FabricMart was definitely superior. I just don't have the budget to be a fabric snob (I am a bit of a yarn snob though, so I'm not insulting the fabric snobs of the world.) -- Edited on 12/7/12 1:53 PM --

I've made men's pajamas of it, and it went limp and thin quickly. I'm glad I didn't use it for a real shirt and put that much work into it. JoAnns "snuggle flannel" varies quite a bit bolt to bolt, but if you choose ones that feel thicker and fluffier, it can be durable. The prints are not much unless you want little kid stuff. JoAnn's solid color flannels seem to be more loosely woven and not as durable as the snuggle prints.

When it comes to flannel I am a fabrtic snob; I want the very softest, thickest and smooshiest. I look for the double-napped (napped on both sides). These pajamas have growth room built in, so I hoped to get two years out of them. Flannel from the quilting companies is so very nice, but I get a little sticker shock when I realize I will need 8 yards! Also, they don't really stock nice manly plaids much. Still, you can't buy children's pjs in cotton flannel any more due to that stupid new law. ------ Melanie

Not great, but OK. The printed flannel seems to be a little beefier than the woven plaids and some have faded quickly where as others don't seem to fade as fast - not sure why that is. I, too, love the flannel from the quilting companies but also suffer from sticker shock when I realize how much yardage I will need to make pajamas from as it's only 42" wide, just like the flannels at Joanns (which are at least much cheaper!) As well, there is usually a lot of waste making pj pants from 42" wide fabric. I wish that it came in 54" widths. I might be more likely to pony up more $$ for the quilting flannels if that were the case. I can also vouch for the Fabricmartfabrics.com plaid flannel that is on sale right now until Monday 12/10. I have yet to wash it, but it feels pretty nice. Not super thick but it is 60" wide and the best quality for the price that I've seen at $3 per yard! ------ Liz
