Eek! Anybody know the "hook & eye" trick? How to sew a hook & eye so it doesn't come apart?

But the hook keeps coming undone! I once read about how to sew them on so this doesn't happen, but I forgot what it was. Anyone? j.

Date: 12/10/12 5:12 AM Well if you have a whole row of them or a line of them closing up something, then you can alternate the hook and eye parts of them, by the sides (right and left) of the opening, they are sewn onto, on something, one one way , and the next the other, and that way when it get's stressed or pulled on, in either direction, they can't all come undone, at once. I don't think that would help at all though, with only 1 sewed on there. But what ever way the pull is most on that one, that is the way you want to sew it on, direction wise, so less likely to be able to come undone on you. Actually, if it's at the bottom of a knee length or longer coat, under the last real button there or lower, I think every time you walk, with alternative legs stepping out and forwards, you would get alternating pulling direction and stress on it. So, maybe one of those great big snaps sewn onto it there, might be better. I do have some coats with large hooks and eye's all sewn one direction, but on all of those, those are sewn in at about waist level and above instead, so my legs are not bumping into that area when I walk. -- Edited on 12/10/12 5:23 AM --

And, yup, the single hook & eye is under the last real button, to keep the bottom of the coat from gaping open as much. Anybody have some kind of advice on what the pros do in this case? So the open end of the hook is against the fabric rather than sticking out - it makes it a bit trickier to do up but also less likely to come undone. I'd also second the suggestion of squeezing the hook gently with a pair of pliers, so that a little force is required to get the loop past the bump on the hook. I find half the hooks and eyes I buy aren't actually tight enough. Hope you suceed! Gemma
