Date: 12/11/12 5:01 PM Hey cat lovers out there! I'm buying some Christmas presents for my feline "children" and want to know of places that sell high quality, durable cat toys.
My cats LOVE the stringy things that attach to a stick. One fave has an attachment that looks like small, thin ribbons. That is my Sphnyx's favorite toy. My Devon Rex likes the feather attachment on the stick. I usually buy two so I don't have to change the attachment that connects the toy to the stick. It always breaks after a day or two--such a disappointment. The toys are cheap, but it's a major nuisance. I would be very willing to pay $30 or $40 for a similar cat toy that is high quality and will last for a long time.
Does anyone now of online sources that sell high quality cat toys like our favorite sticks with strings or feathers? Do you own quality toys that are durable and can withstand an hour of playtime every day?
My cats and I would really appreciate any help or info in leading us to toys that would give us lots of enjoyable playtime!

Date: 12/11/12 6:20 PM My cats aren't that into the string things, even with the enticing feathers, but they like wool catnip toys, and those seem to last pretty well.
Do you do machine embroidery? Urban threads has a design or two that would make fun cat toys, like this one:

Date: 12/11/12 6:21 PM I also recently got this: Catit cat puzzle. There is an opening on top that I put a clear plastic lid over, since some reviews I read said that some cats are smart enough to bypass the puzzle and go in through there. It took my cats a while to figure it out, but now they like to sit around it, and reach in and try to snag or push pieces of food around.

The really do last although in my multi cat household they do get the stuffing pulled out of them, months later. |

Date: 12/11/12 6:39 PM These are also a huge hit with my female cats: pom-poms. they must really feel like prey, because they love to chase them, and then carry them around with that "look what I got" growly noise going on... ------

Date: 12/11/12 8:10 PM Wow! Lots of great toys...thank you, everyone!!! We do have a lot of ball-like toys, catnip stuffed mice, and one of the ball chaser things in a round tube. They do like all of those, but I think the one they both will love is the doorknob string toy. That is definitely right up their alley. My Devon goes bonkers over 1/4" ribbon but I don't like to use that as a play toy except on special occasions because he will eventually get too much going on in his mouth with it. Same cat that shares my love of silk organza, lol, but I keep that under lock and key because he would choke on it if left out.
Again, thanks all for the suggestions, and thanks PattyE for that link. The doorknob string will make them very happy on Christmas. ------

Date: 12/12/12 0:02 AM I don't buy any of the toys with elastic string/cord anymore. Several years ago, I heard a faint cry coming from the room where the toy was hooked on a doorknob. Chloe had stretched the cord while she was playing...apparently was holding the toy in her mouth & rolling on the floor. The cord was wrapped around her neck...really tight. You know how elastic does...when it was no longer being stretched, it just tightened down on her neck! If she'd been home along, she would have been strangled! If you buy these for your cat, PLEASE don't let them play with it unattended! |

 2 members like this. I've sewn cat toys for my kitties. They were little squares with fleece and catnip inside. They had cat related embroidery designs on them. The cats loved them, layed on them, and flipped them around. ------

I too make the squares & rectangles filled with nip & they like them. Also if you are a knitter there are patterns on Ravelry to make up that the girls love! .........
Of course nothing beats the old pile of milk jug rings put together ... they LOVE those! ------
