Do you change auto tension

OK I have had my Quilt Expression 4.0 for a few weeks now. Today was the first time I decided to free motion quilt using the Sensormatic Foot. It auto changes the tension to 5.2 when you select the Sensormatic Mode. I am not getting a nice stitch so I need to change the tension. I am having difficulty figuring out what to set the tension at. Do you find you need to manually change the tension when using this mode? Or is there something else I need to do in this mode?

Julie

Yes, try different tension settings and see what you like best. It all depends on your thread, fabric and batting you're using. You can also change the height of the foot, lower the foot in case of skipped stitches.
My experience is that this foot works best with low loft batting.
For higher loft batting a hopping foot works better. Imho.

Thanks. What I finally did was change the pivot height to -3, set swtitch length to 00 and turned off the auto presser lift. When I did this I did not have to change the pre-set tension at all. I only use Warm and Natural batting and the Sensormatic foot worked well with it. I think the problem was that I had let the pivot height at 0 and it was causing the bobbin thread not to catch.

I'm glad it works for you. My manual (CS) says to set the speed at half-speed. Did you try that? It may give you more control with regards to even stitches. I see you also have the Elna 740. Which do you prefer for fmq?

Yep I did have speed set to 1/3 speed and that helps alot. So far I prefer to FMQ with the 740 but that may be because I have had it for a year and learned to FMQ on it. Plus I have the extension table for the Elna and I place a teflon liner on it. I bought the QE 4 for my travel machine so I could FMQ and quilt at class and in my sewing club. The QE4 is a little more portable than the Elna. The Elna has better lighting also. I am, however, in love with the auto presser lift on the QE4.
