I enjoy making pillows with heavy upholstery fabrics, piping, Turkish corners, etc., but my old machine often cannot handle the thickness of all those layers. What is the best machine for sewing many layers of heavy fabrics?

Probably an industrial machine.

My 15-91 could handle that, I'm certain. I don't know how it would hold up to a daily regimen of those, but I don't think the typical living room update would be a problem.

One of the Pfaff 300 series could handle that no problem. Finding them however is a little more complicated.

A sewing machine repairman once told me that machines can handle anything as long as it has the right needle. I have never tested this theory though. Having said that, I love my Singer 201 for sewing pillows made from upholstery fabrics and fringe. It handles 10 layers of knit fabric beautifully. Let us know what you find!

I think a big part is motorized vs computerized. You need electrical power from the foot pedal in a mechanical or industrial machine.
A computerized machine sends the message to the parts about how they need to adjust depending on what you select on the screen.
A mechanical, motorized is simply on and off- full power ahead and controlled by adjusting your foot pressure. Anything in the feed dogs will get sent though (given that you can put it beneath a presser foot!).
