Money gifts to the hairdresser
JTink Intermediate VA USA Member since 4/20/08 Posts: 4815	Login to reply to this post Like this post Date: 12/18/12 2:39 PM It's that time of year again...how much to give to the folks who do our hair, housekeeping etc. My situation: My hair dresser of many years, has brought her grown daughter into the "business". Some months the daughter cuts my hair, other months, Mom cuts it. They work out side of "mom's" house and sometimes are both there working on customers. How do I handle the "Christmas Money"? I'm already paying $30.00 every four weeks for a haircut. In the past, I've left about $20-$25 in a money card for "mom". She has made it very clear, she doesn't care for anything other than money What do I do if daughter cuts my hair this week? "Mom" is still going to expect her "gift". Do I not leave anything for daughter? Do I address the envelope with both names? I feel leaving $20+ dollars for both is just over the top for someone who pinches pennies like I do.

But I think $20 should be adequate and would be appreciated. Your issue is a bit unique. I would probably give $15 to each of them. My hairdresser /shop owner has recently been having an assistant wash the hair etc. she (primary hairdresser) applies color and then does the cut. I think that the primary hairdressor is "supposed" to tip the assistant out of HER tip but I find myself giving some to the assistant and some to the hairdresser/shop owner. I am generous but this adds to the $$$ I leave. I tip 20% each time I go but I dont do a holiday tip. It is my understanding that the client does not have to tip the owner but I do. Adding an assistant trips me up. I hate tipping of all kinds..it is always confusing! I've always given her a money gift at Christmas. She has made it clear to me, that some of her customers give her money for her birthday as well...I don't. I remember a thread on there sometime ago, about what we all go through just to get a great hair cut

But now that she cuts in-home, she considers us all her "friends". She has had me cutting waxing strips for her. She gave me a sample to take with me. I searched the fabric stores till I found the right weight (and color)broadcloth. Washed and ironed the material, marked it and cut out over 300(bias) waxing strips. I've done this for her twice. She will pay me the few dollars the material costs, but has never mentioned paying me for my time This lady is from Viet Nam. Married a U.S. soldier(no longer married)...had his kids. Most of the kids were born here in America. The daughter(who is in her mid 40's) is very much American. Her mother, after decades in this country, still has some issues with language and customs. Once, when just her daughter and I were alone, I suggested that her mother tends to switch off her Americanization when it suits her...daughter agreed. My Grandmother was from Italy. I can generally understand most broken English...but my Hairdresser is still very hard to understand at times. She has been in this country for over 40 years. Example: A month ago, she asked me to buy her some "noodles". Both her daughter and I(and the other lady getting her hair done)couldn't figure out why she was asking me for "noodles". After a lot of back and forth, I finally understood that she wanted me to pick her up some Needles for her sewing machine! She buys a new car every few years. She will only by the ones with names she can pronouce. Honest! About 10 years ago, she told me she really like a certain vehicle(showed me a picture of it)but had trouble pronouncing the name, so wouldn't buy it. She's a bit of a puzzle, but she does wonders with my hair. She's in her late 60's and grooming her daughter to take over the "business". I try to keep her happy, but at an arms length. I will no longer to the wax strips. Told her I just don't have the time anymore
