Date: 12/19/12 5:01 PM I know I can use these on my Brother, but can I use them on a 237 (1960's) Singer, an older mechanical Bernina, a mechanical Viking, and a computerized Viking?
They are the same as any other good basic needle brand? |

Date: 12/19/12 5:11 PM I have always used Organ needles on my Janomes and my Bernina. They are a good quality needle. I prefer them over Schmetz. ------

Date: 12/19/12 5:38 PM Thank you. I thought it was a silly question, but I was playing around with fabrics from the Craftsy bag making class on my basic plastic Singer, and the flywheel snapped and flew off along with a few metal springs.
After that I got nervous and began to question any future changes even as small as needle types. The machine was very inexpensive and 15 years old. |

 1 member likes this. It would have to be one tough needle to wreck a hand wheel. The needle would bend or break before the machine self-destroyed.
Have your machine serviced once a year if you sew several hours each day.
Use the correct needle type and size according to fabric type.
Do not force the machine to feed fabrics too thick or rubbery. |

Date: 12/19/12 7:17 PM My husband took it apart when he got home. The plastic inside the handwheel crumbled and that's why the springs sprung. Just plastic and use. It was in excellent condition up until now. We've decided not to fix it, but take off a few parts that could work on the older Singer 237. I need to use the Singer 237 more anyway. |

Date: 12/20/12 8:37 AM I only used Singer needles and the occasional Schmetz in my Singer, but it was a 90's something model. We used it a lot for home, craft, and the boys learned to sew on it. It had never given me any problems. I had just finished winding a bobbin and was reengaging the wheel when it popped and little metal pieces flew out. I'm not a rope um and tie um girl. I'm more of a dressage girl, so it had never had any rough handling and lived in a purchased plastic case when it was not in use. The machine had an older look and feel to it, so we enjoyed using it.
I got a little Brother cs6000 last holiday season when Amazon dropped their price down. I've just purchased my first set of Organ needles and tried one out in the Brother. It felt nice. I had been using Schmetz before. We will just start using the Brother more now.
I do still have some Singer needles, but I was given a Singer 237 a few years ago, and I can used the Singer needles in that. Once you get that one plugged in and going, it has a nice Father Knows Best Feel to it. I think I will be happy to be using it more. It has a serger on top it's table right now.
The Bernina gets Bernina needles and Schmetz and she's always been miss perfect. The Vikings (100 and 770) have gotten Schmetz, some Orange needles I bought from Silhouette patterns and they've never had any probelms with those. I have yet to try Organ needles in the other machines at this point.
I'm nostalgic about the Singer's passing, but I had begun feeling overwhelmed by 6 sewing machines. I had been rotating projects on all of them to keep the wheels turning. The Bernina will now be making classic shirts the Craftsy way, the Viking 770, Butterick 5614 again for this spring and summer, the Brother a handbag. I recently received an invisible zipper foot for the Brother and it's a nice foot. I even tried it on the Bernina with an adaptor. I haven't put in a zipper with it yet. |

(The 221s are short shank; the other four are slant) But I do know it's recommended to use Singer needles in vintage Singer machines because that's what they "grew up on", so I have a few spares handy.------

Date: 12/20/12 9:01 AM I use either Schmetz or Organ on any of my machnes and they work great. I do use some Bernina needles because they came with the machines but I buy Schmetz or Organ. ------

Date: 12/20/12 9:36 AM Please tell me more about the slant on vintage Singers. I have two older Singers. A Singer 99 and another which is even older. I've never used the older one. I am not aware of a slant issue. ------
