Kissing Hand Mitten Project Offering Comfort to Sandy Hook Children

Date: 12/19/12 10:25 PM I posted the following in PR's Knitting Lounge and a fellow poster suggested I post the information here as well: I'm sure you know about the tragic event at an elementary school in Sandy Hook/Newtown, Connecticut. Because many of us feel the need to respond in a supportive way when an event like this takes place, I thought I'd forward an email I received about the Kissing Hand Mitten Project. Here's the message: Good Morning everyone, I am working to bring knitters and crafters together in a project to benefit the children of Newtown, CT. The basic idea revolves around a children's book titled: The Kissing Hand. For those of you who don't know it, it a very cute story about a raccoon baby who is having anxiety about going to school. The Mommy raccoon kisses the palm of the baby raccoon's hand and sends him off to school with a "kissing hand" so that during the day, if the child needs some love from home, they will have it in the palm of their hand. If ever there were a group of children who needed a "Kissing Hand" it is the children of Newtown. So...The project will be to knit mittens with a small heart on one palm. Just one of the two mittens, either hand.... Or embroider on homemade mittens, or applique a felt heart onto one mitten in a pair, or paint one on a mitten with glitter paint... etc. The idea is to provide kissing hand mittens, using whatever talents you have and would like to share. If you need to buy the mittens and proceed from there, I don't think the families of Newtown would mind one bit. Even children should be able to sew a felt heart into the palm of a mitten! I intend on using my children and their friends to prove that point! I intend to cast my net wide on this project. I am looking to share this project with any knitting & crafts clubs I can find. I would also like to contact the author/ publisher of the book to perhaps have them support the project in some way. If any of you feel moved to help in some way, please jump in! I am willing to accept help and guidance in any areas of this project. Also, please feel free to share this email as you wish. At this point, I am making my home the delivery point for mittens, and am happy to share my address with anyone who wants to mail mittens in, from anywhere on the planet. Date: 12/20/12 8:43 AM NON-KNITTERS SEW MITTENS FOR NEWTOWN CHILDREN! -- you can sew a yo-yo heart or button onto the palm of a purchased pair of mittens. Tutorial to make heart-shaped yo-yo's are HERE. You could also sew a little heart-shaped button onto the palm of the mitten/glove. -- you can SEW FLEECE FABRIC MITTENS: HERE are some patterns! -- you can sew mittens out of old SWEATERS! I'm just getting into knitting, so I've decided to do the Gifting Bunny from UrbanThreads. They had started the project before the tragedy in CT, but have provided new gift tags so you give a bunny in memory of a victim. I plan to create a bunch tonight and give some to co-workers, others I will hand out to strangers around town. Can I also send some to you for folks in CT? After doing the faces, I slipped another piece of fleece under the hoop and stitched the front and back together 'in the hoop', then cut them out (so they have the SA on the outside and I don't have to turn.) Oops, I checked the site to tell you where on page it was and some other news took its place! But, it will show up in print I'm sure. It spoke of the warehouse of books and mittens coming in from all over, including the Virgin Islands. Yeah, man, this is important. ------ I try all things. I achieve what I can.
