Use fabric instead of wrapping paper

Date: 12/22/12 7:13 AM Just wanted to share this idea: A couple years ago I decided to wrap most of my presents with fabric instead of paper. I collected remnants that I thought looked 'Christmasy' and also purchased some holiday prints from the quilting section in the fabric store. I cut them into various sized pieces and pinked the edges to keep them from raveling. Then I just used ribbons to tie them up. Sometimes I just wrap them like you would wrap a box with paper, but sometimes I make designs using pleats and twists (which require pins, so I don't do that on the kids' gifts). All my gifts go to family members, so I just collect my supplies at the end of the present-opening extravaganza to save for next year. I feel much more "green" by not throwing out tons of paper each year, the presents look much prettier.

Date: 12/22/12 8:14 AM I have a "green" friend who abhors wrapping paper. She quilts and is on a limited income, so every year, I make her a gift bag out of fabric. One half yard, sewn together in a large stitch that she can rip out easily. Another thing I do for kids is wrap their gifts in a pillowcase I've made in a print of their choice. It uses more than scrap sized pieces, but would be excellent for giving to people who sew. The sparkly, shiny fabric I use is great for gift wrap and since it is lycra, it doesn't ravel. Plus it is stretchy, so it accommodates oddly sized items. At our staff party this year the little bag I used that honestly took less time to make than using wrapping paper would have got rave reviews. Oh - and the idea of using a long stitch reminds me that I sometimes "wrap" baby gifts in a receiving blanket that is machine basted together. I have some sewn fabric bags in different sizes that I reuse each year but I've never used fabric as a flat sheet. I also purchased cute paper or felt gift bags and boxes that I reuse each year, and they look cute under the tree. In addition to holding gifts, I also use them to hold cards I'm writing, tape, spare decorations & other clutter... no one but me knows it's not a gift in some of those. ------ SewWannabe-SewReady

I love nothing better than my daughters gift of fabric- all tied up with beautiful, sew-able ribbon, too. ------ re-living my youth through sewing...

Date: 12/23/12 9:46 AM I hate all of the left over paper at Christmas so a few years ago I bought some kids holiday quilting cotton and use that to wrap the grandkid's gifts. I collect it when the pandemonium is over and use it year after year. My plan is to make tree skirts or quilts when the kids are older and then gift those to each child. ------ ~ Debby

I purchase after the holiday when it goes on sale and I have quite a stash of it for 'wrapping'. I usually make pillow case type bags, stuff the gift in and tie ribbon around the top...so easy! and green! I usually am in a situation that I can ask for my 'wrapping' back to reuse next year. But no big loss if the recipient keeps it since I buy more every year after Christmas.
