I have the opportunity to buy a year old, mostly unused Bernina 830E for just a little more than what the B710 will cost me new.
(basically for the same price as a 750)
So I put it to YOU!
Which would you buy?

Does that 830 come from a dealer who will provide mastery lessons and any warranty at all? Might be a bit much of a machine if you don't do embroidery.
But if you do, it might be an excellent choice. I'd be a bit scary of getting a complicated machine like that with no classes or warranty though.
Have you sewn on it to see if you like it?

No dealer, local seller.
Low mileage machine, I haven't gone and tried it yet, but they say it's in pristine shape.
I don't do embroidery now, but I don't think giving myself options is ever a bad thing.
The only downside is the warranty...

Boy that is one tough call. The 830 is an awesome beast, and one could certainly spend months learning it. Would your local Bernina dealer allow you to pay for mastery classes? I know you could figure things out yourself, but I would want them for that particular machine.
Definitely go play with it, and let us know what you think!

Wow, tough call. Any way to get it checked out by a trustworthy tech? Or are you are proficient with the computerized ones as the vintage models?

I am as inept with the computerized machines as I am competent with the mechanical.

I bought my 730 used on eBay, took a risk of no warranty, but given the savings I decided that i could pay for repairs if needed with the money I saved. Fingers crossed and knocking on wood she's been a dream for 2 years now. I love her so much and I just couldn't afford new. I didn't know it at the time, but I think you can buy a warranty on a used machine from Square Trade if you do it soon after purchase you might want to look into it before hand. My local dealer is sorta snooty about used machines but they've been more than happy to take my money (they like money) for classes and maintenace. I pay about $40 per class. To get around the snooty, I just say I inherited her. Personally I don't know why dealers don't embrace the secondary used market, without it how would they get people to plunk down $$$ for the latest TOL when they already own a perfectly wonderful machine. Oh they also don't mind selling me feet and hoops and thread and fabric and seminars eiither. I can't speak to whether this is a good deal or not, but I paid about a 3rd of the new price quoted.

You really need to try the machine, test it completely embroidery and all. Why is it being sold? How old is it?
Maybe asked to have it checked out by a really good tech.

I found the 830 to be too much automation for me personally, but if the price was not so daunting when I looked at it I amy have been more open to it. If that makes sense to you.

I found it to be louder then the 750, but it was not an annoying sound, like a high pitched squeal that computer machines sometimes have. Goth did you try out the 710/750?
The 830E is a lot more machine and embroidery is larger the harp 2 inches bigger for the price. Sounds very tempting to me, but remember buyer beware. I had the opprotunity to briefly sew on an 820 and was very impressed. It was tight and smooth stitches were super.

I had an opportunity to get a used 830LE this summer for about $7,500. That included a Horn Cabinet & some extra footsies.

Tempting, but I passed.

These machines and their lousy warranties freak me out.

So unless it is an absolutely SCREAMING deal... I'd pass.

I got the Ellisimo Gold with a load of goodies for about the same amount of $$.. plus a 3 year bumper to bumper labor included warranty.
