Les Miserables Take tissues!

Date: 12/26/12 0:48 AM Because we had our big family dinner a day early, it allowed us to see Les Mis on opening day. It turned out that we couldn't all go together, so the "boys" went in the morning and we "girls" went in the afternoon. I actually got to see DH in the parking lot as he left. He advised me to make sure we had hankies and boy, we needed them! Our family are big Le Mis geeks. In fact yesterday we had a showdown between the 10th anniversary performances and the 25th, complete with a voting system and a spreadsheet. So we were primed and ready for the film. Hugh Jackman should just take his Oscar now. Oh my goodness. Hope all you musical fans enjoy it as much as we did! ------ http://bgballroom.wordpress.com to follow the progress on my next ballgown.

I've seen the musical three times and have cried every time I've seen it. Watch him briefly at about 13 minutes into this scene. It's the point at which Javert begins to realize his impossible position between the justice and the law. I knew the story, my Grade 7 teacher Mr. Dempster read it to us over the course of the year. Dh had no idea of the story line. It was a little book with illustrations from I guess the 1935 movie. I remember it was particularly good for launching rubber bands from on the bus ride home. My DH was also uninformed, but is now a massive fan. We are both huge musical fans -- neither of us have seen the stage production of Les Miserables but we both took the book in school. My teacher was amazing and I remember how much I loved that English class. DH, on the other hand, had the opposite experience with a very bad teacher which made him have a strong dislike for the story. Les Miserables is on our "short list" of musicals to see -- in the meantime we will enjoy the movie I'm sure. This Les Mis version has never even come up on my radar to even consider. I saw a Phantom of the Opera production live in Munich and hated it...confirming my long held dislike for this mode of entertainment. I need to get my 90 year old Mother out so I thought this movie would be one to take her to. When I realized not ONE (well maybe there was one) word was spoken I wanted to get up and leave...but my Mother was happily ensconced in her chair so I would not be able to get out very easily. I stayed. After awhile I began to realize the singing was actually conveying messages that were more powerful in lots of ways than the spoken word. Music reaches places words do not and art reaches places too that cannot be tabulated. I knew the story but this portrayal was powerful. ------ "The problem is not that there are problems.
