I purchased a new HP Envy laptop with Windows 8 specifically for my sewing room - embroidery, PR, shopping, etc.

However... it has Windows 8. After struggling with the computer the entire morning, I have decided to return it. I find Windows 8 to be difficult to use -- not at all intuitive. I also do not like how web pages are displayed differently than through any other OS. I am very comfortable on the computer and anticipate a bit of a learning curve with new technology. Even after the learning curve, I am not a fan.

Has anyone else used Windows 8? Thumbs up or thumbs down?

My husband got Windows 8 2 weeks or so ago. "Upgraded" (note quotes) from Vista.

I haven't used it myself - except a couple of nights ago he fell asleep on the sofa, and being a good wife, I decided I would shut his PC down.

Well - I hunted, but I COULD NOT figure out how to shut it down. Left him a post-it note on the monitor asking him for enlightenment. DH says "Google it."

Yep, all Windows 8 users will need to relearn how to turn off their PCs

You are absolutely right, not intuitive at all.

Apparently, it's pretty good for a tablet and lousy on a PC.

The other thing he really grumbled about is that Windows 8 does not recognize network drives. We store our photos on an external server - DH is a computer guy and we have a pretty complicated home network - and Windows 8 could not "see" it. He eventually figured something out, but it was real complicated.

No advice for you, just grumbling. But I know I am not "upgrading" to 8 from 7, and I don't even use my computer for sewing aside from internet search and this board.

Suo ergo maledicto

Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary. - Steve Jobs

I have to say the opposite I got my daughter a windows 8 laptop and setting up ran very smoothly from connecting with our wifi internet to getting her music in itunes from an external drive. I think the new windows is pretty neat what I got to see of it. It is different. I guess for puter nerds just another new toy to figure out and play with.

I've just played around with it so far on others computers, but I like it. My sister bought a new juiced up tablet that she docks and uses like a desktop with an extended display on two monitors and full-size keyboard. She absolutely loves it, and she's a power user with a fairly extensive home network.

I installed Windows 8 and I find that in some cases I am using more mouse clicks to get the same tasks done, relative to Windows 7. It took me a couple of days to get used to it. I haven't had any issues connecting to networks or remote drives. All of my software is compatible. As an IT person, I need to be familiar with it but I can see how novice users could initially have issues.
