Can anyone explain to me why there aren't any men's pea coat patterns available? You'd think it would be one of those standard, classic things to have around, but I've been searching for months, on and off, and have found nothing. The only thing I've seen are vintage patterns that are already sold or the one from a Japanese pattern book that I can't find anywhere for sale.
I'd love to make one for my husband. If anyone knows where I can get one, I'd love to know. Thanks!

Wonderful! Thank you so much! I don't know how I missed that 1870s coat, but I didn't see it. I used to live in Japan and can read a little Japanese so I think I might be able to do well wtih that pattern. Thanks!

I had the same dilema as you but I ended up getting the japanese coat bok. It's easy enough to find in LA. I know one of the places that sells it ships books anywhere so I can send you the link if you need it. its a great book and hubby actually is excited about getting a coat made.

There was an issue of Burda that had one a few years ago. It was back when I had a subscription, so I'm guessing 2008-2010-ish?

crisford made a beautiful, classic peacoat for her son

using Burda WOF 10-2006-129. She lowered the high-placed handwarmer pockets to the proper level. Her review is here.

I think the seller of this Simplicity pattern is unintentionally misleading potential buyers, for though she/he is pleased to call the design a 'pea coat,' it is actually a fairly classic duffle coat, with the knee length, patch pockets, a hood option, and the toggle closings.

A pea coat is a sailor's garment, going back a couple of hundred years. The dense fabric is somewhat wind-and weather-proof; the short length (for non-officers) lets you move about for active work; and the double-breast lets you shift the closure according to the wind you are facing. The handwarmer pockets keep your fingers workable on watch.

i have one from burdastyle ($4 it's a download) that i plan to use as a base to make some pea coats (one for my 13yo, and one for a friend).

Adam, on BurdaStyle

i'll draft my own collar.
