Tell me about Modes Royale found a catalog

Has anyone used these patterns or know their history? ------ My grandmother taught me to sew when I was 10, and I've been sewing ever since.

However, I was lucky enough to buy a ton of sewing stuff from an estate that included about 30 Modes Royale catalogs from the 40's through the early 60's. They published the main catalog twice per year, and supplements in between. Patterns were then ordered from the catalog. It was all mail order. There were also mailings that included fabric swatches - maybe with the supplements? There was a more expensive line of patterns, and a less expensive in each catalog. I think maybe one other as well. (mine are still packed so cannot look). The patterns are numbered sequentially with a letter indicating the series. The catalogs also have great and interesting articles. One I remember from the 50's was a top of the line sewing machine comparison, with pictures. The ads in the catalogs are great! All in all, these catalogs are some of the best vintage eye candy around. The clothing designs are really high fashion and exquisite

Date: 12/30/12 7:15 PM Have maybe a dozen Modes Royale patterns and have used several of the suit/jacket patterns - primarily 50s, early 60s. From a design standpoint, they are top drawer - very high fashion/avant garde. Patterns and catalogs are on the expensive side for vintage sewing materials. Instructions are pretty limited and the designs aren't necessarily straight-forward. I always make a test version - both to check fit and to figure out the construction (took me forever to figure out the one where the outside edges of the jacket collar were sewn into the jacket front). They're worth the effort though. It may be a function of the patterns I used - 50s jackets were pretty structured/highly fitted - but I think you'd find that they run small compared to the other pattern brands (of the same era - so a 1950s 12 in Modes Royale seems to run smaller than a 1950s Vogue or Butterick pattern). Agree that the catalogues are total eye candy. Lucky you to find one.
