Hi there pattern wizards. Hoping someone can chime in on how to make a knit neckband "twist" I just can't seem to wrap my head around it...

I copied this RTW top for my aunt in Florida. It's her favorite and near falling apart so I said I'd give it a go. I am quite pleased with it but I think it would be better with the twist. I basically just made a regular knit neckband with a fatter "tube" than usual.

Any thoughts on getting that twist? It's not evident on the inside how this is accomplished.

If there's a pattern I could look at which has a similar neckband feature that would be interesting as well.

Here's my pic of my copy top in red, and the RTW top in black. Thanks for any replies.

I hope this shows up maybe its too subtle to bother.

I've made a few of those, by folding the neckband/collar the way you have, then sliding the inside of it to one side to create a permanent twist. (For example, try sliding the CF mark on the inside over so it's 1-1/2" from the CF mark on the outside of the collar.) Once you're happy with the effect, pin it in place all the way around and stitch it to the bodice. I can't tell you how far to slide it, since it depends on the height of the collar band and the fabric. It's better if you experiment and eyeball it until you get the kind of drapey folds you like.

EDIT: This means, of course, that you have to create the twist before you attach the collar, so you might want to leave the one you have finished alone and try it on the next one.

Karla is right. You start with the neckband unfolded. Draw or eyeball vertical lines about 1 1/2 inches apart. Then take one bottom mark and match it with the next top mark. Pin,baste, swear, then go on to the next. Basting as you go will alleviate some but not all of the swearing. There will be some fudging, but with trial and error you can make it look good. It looks like you have the width right by the way. The red top is lovely!

Thank you so much Karla, Connie, and Sherril. I needed some expert help with this one. Just couldn't grasp it.

Now it makes perfect sense! Looking forward to trying that technique tomorrow!

Cheers and thanks again.
