Hi there! I just received a Brother 1034D serger for Christmas. I got around to setting it up last night and the knives do not move. I have tried the lever on the side but nothing happens. The top knife will move up and down if I push it with my finger but nothing else that I do will make the knives move. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

My first guess was that you had turned off the cutter but you said you changed the lever on the side. The book says to move the knife lever onloy while the needle is at its lowest point (pg 55 in the manual). Did this work at all for you? Can you turn the handwheel and see parts moving? Does it make a stitch?
Ok I went to look at mine. I can't move the knife with my finger. Something is wrong. Could something have worked loose in shipping? Check screws etc. They are tight on my machine. Make sure you turn it off to work on this. I am not sure what else it could be.

Thanks for the reply. I've tried to turn the cutter on/off with the needles in the lowest position and nothing happens. But when I flip the switch on the side it doesn't feel like anything is happening. I've sewn a few stitches with the cover open so that I could watch it work. The cutter does nothing. All of the screws are tight and nothing seems loose. I think that there must be something brokenI hate to send it back but I guess I'll have to.

I just checked my Brother serger. I can't move my upper knife manually until I turn the hand wheel towards me, and switch the blade "off". Then I can push the upper knife down with my finger. It then stays down and doesn't move while turning the wheel until I switch the knife button back "on" to engage it. I keep turning the hand wheel towards me until a loud "click" happens, and the upper knife engages again.

I hope that by fiddling with the knife "on/off" and turning the hand wheel (and even pressing the upper blade down) will eventually get things working for you. If I remember correctly, the first time I disengaged the knife, I couldn't get it to work again for a while - at least not until I heard the loud "click", at which point I thought I broke something. Gave me a bit of a scare too.

Good luck - I'd play with it a bit more before I'd send it back - it may be something simple.
