Hi everyone,

I just began teaching myself to sew and I'm already having trouble. I have a Singer 327k that my husband's aunt gave to me. It is running well, until I try to run fabric through it.
The top thread snaps after about 1/2inch of stitching, and when I look at the fabric, there is a big mess of top thread under the fabric (the top looks clean and neat). Second, the bobbin thread isn't pulling through at all.
The manual isn't giving me much help, so any thoughts would be much appreciated! Thanks

Has the machine been used in recent years? My first step would be to give a proper cleaning of the bobbin area, brush between the tension disks to remove lint, etc. you may need to make some minute adjustments. The manual should have instructions for this. There is a yahoo group for owners of vintage singers which may be helpful, and a wealth of info on the web. Good luck and happy sewing!

The thread could be catching on the thread slit on the spool. Try putting it upside down and be sure to use a felt ring under spool. Thread following directions with presser foot up (I am not sure if I did that, but probably did it automatically without thinking.).

Be sure bobbin holder is in proper position after cleaning out the area.

This machine requires oil and also should be lubed occasionally with Singer oil and lube.

De-thread
Clean the machine out as thouroughly as you can
oil the appropriate bits.
replace the needle.
rethread
set upper tension to 4
sew
watch what happens, and let us know

This one, that one, and a bunch of other ones!
(though the herd is getting more streamlined)
