I have a husqvarna emerald 116. It has a automatic buttonhole foot that does the button hole in one stitch. It starts out fine and does the first side fine as well. The problem is on the return stitch is only a strait stitch or sometimes it does a much looser zigzag, but it is not nearly like the first side of the machine. In the end, it get about half a really awesome first half of a buttonhole. I really have no clue of how to approach the troubleshooting for this and the manual was no help on this end.

This sounds like a mechanical issue and I would take it back to the dealer. Hopefully you purchased your machine through a dealer.

Yes, my daughter's Janome Magnolia 7318 is doing this, and her machine is under a year old and has done it with the button holes since day 1. I've emailed back and forth with the online dealer we bought it from, who has been really helpful, but we've determined it is going to need to be serviced. That would mean shipping it back to Texas (SewVacDirect), and since it's a 9 month old machine, coming up on a year, and would need a yearly servicing anyway, I'm going to take it to a local dealer that I recently found only an hour away. Paying for that is going to approach the same cost of shipping it as carefully as I would, anyway.
