I know that there are lots of members here on Pattern Review who live outside the US but like to purchase sewing supplies, patterns, and fabric from US sellers. On January 27th the price for shipping internationally from the US is doubling, yes doubling, for lots of packages. While a 1 ounce package costs a little over $3 to ship internationally now, it will be closer to $7 after the 27th.It isn't quite doubling for heavier weight packages, but the increase is still significant. Just thought I would give a bit of a heads up if you live outside the US but have been thinking of purchasing something. :]

That will kill off a lot of international sales. Certainly to me.

I have bought books from Amazon.com occasionally and the postage was reasonable. However when I looked at Fabric websites the postage was absolutely ridiculous! I did buy some interfacing from Pam Erny and just bit my lip at the postage because I had heard such good things about it. I also had to pay duty which wasn't too much, but Royal Mail stuck a large handling charge on it.
I don't understand USPS charging policy, don't they want any business? I shan't be buying anything from the US in future at those prices.

Thank you for posting this information. I also won't be purchasing anything from the US after the 27th.

We here in the US don't even understand USPS policy. I will say, they are getting lots more competition nowadays from FedEx and UPS, who basically charge the same or barely more and have much faster and better and easily trackable service. So perhaps they're losing business and are making up for the loss this way. But it doesn't overall look like a wise business strategy to me. Of course, that's part of the problem: they aren't run strictly as a business to begin with but are controlled by the Fed. govt. One thing I don't know, though, is how much of their shipping is domestic vs. international. If it's primarily domestic, perhaps they are figuring they won't lose much. If such were the case, they wouldn't, but those who do need to order from the US would be on the losing end. Hhmm. Sorry no answers for you, but I'm sorry for the frustration. Quite sorry.

Add me to the list of those who won't purchase from the US in future unless it's absolutely essential. This will be very damaging to a lot of retailers, I'm sure, but will do a big favour to the ones in the UK and elsewhere in Europe, and the eBay sellers in Asia.

It's a shame, but shipping from the US to New Zealand was so high that I rarely shopped there anyway. Now I'll just spend my money elsewhere.

Yep, buying from the US is off the menu for me too. Probably a good thing, I don't need more fabric...

Wow, it's too bad the USPS doesn't read forums like this. I think businesses are going to begin really suffering if people from other countries can't afford to order U.S. products anymore.

I don't think it's USPS.... it's the goverment slapping taxes on it or something because our USPS is in trouble fiancially.
