I'm getting ready to sew a leotard for my DD. I also have a new coverstitch that I am planning to use as well. I'm a little anxious.

I will be using Jalie 3138, the bike/unitard view. (I didn't want to deal with elastic for my first version.

-size to cut?
When sewing for a three yr old, is it best to sew for her current size or should I go up one size to allow for room to grow?

-equipment
I have a serger and coverstitch machine. I was thinking about using the coverstitch for the arm and neck bindings, but only have the attachment called "tape Binder" I don't have any specific 'a' or 'b' binders yet.

-order of construction
If I can use my binder I assume that my order of construction will change a bit so to bind the arms and neck flat... How would that work?

Thanks so much for holding my hand through this!!

I think all 3 yr old girls are going to get taller during the course of a whole year or so. That is a given. I think some of them may get a bit wider around too, but some might actually not. So, if I thought it would get worn many times a week, and maybe actually ever be able to get worn out in a year and wanted it to fit perfect at the moment, I would just cut size to whatever was current, but if instead I thought it was only going to get worn occasionally, and not get much wear and tear on it per week or so, and I wanted it to last the very longest fit wise, I might make it a tiny bit longer like as long as the next size up. But that is the kind of thing I might be thinking about if just buying one at a store too.

The great thing about sewing for kids (well, one great thing) is that you don't use much fabric, so if it turns out badly you don't have much to lose. If you don't already have some, get some cheap fabric for test runs so you don't stress about using the "good stuff."

I have a serger and cover stitch, but still zig zag elastic on a la the Kwik Sew method. Others serge with the knife removed and some use binders on their CS. It will just depend on our own style and what works for you.

Have fun!

I sew leotards for little ones all the time, ( about 100 a year) and I always use the full girth measurment to determine the size to make.
Remember it is easy to shorten the legs if they are too long, and the same with sleeves, but addinj to the body length is not fun!!!!!
I seldom bind little leos, I just fold over and coverstitch the neck and hems with a double line (2 needles) on my coverstitch machine.
Have fun.
Pam
