I recently bought Colette's Macaron pattern. It's my first Colette pattern and I have been ogling that website for ages, so I was absolutely thrilled to start and have all sorts of ideas. I have fabric to make a couple of different versions, but I'm having a lot of trouble with the fit...

I cut a size 0, which is pretty close to my measurements for bust, waist, and hip. A couple of things are easy to fix, like a slightly-too-small waistband and a wide back. What I'm chiefly having trouble with is a lot of excess fabric in the yoke, that gathers around the armpit and upper bust. What can I do with this? I can't put it into a dart, since there is no dart nearby. Has anyone encountered this issue with the Macaron, and what did you do?

My mother suggested that I cut an entire size down and do an FBA (the bust dart hits me slightly too high as it is), but I'm already cutting at the smallest size so I can't. Should I do an FBA anyway?

Hi, Alice. The Macaron is definitely a cute dress! What types of fabric have you made your current version from? Do you think you could post a picture of the fitting issues? Good luck!

Katrina

I too have been ogling Collette's site and patterns. Did you find the answer to your fitting woes? I'd be curious as to what you did and how it worked out. Anyway, good luck! And Happy and Healthy New Year!

Hello again!

I made a second muslin this morning, with a narrower back and deeper armscyes. It was quite a bit better, but still not quite right. My fitting woes haven't been entirely solved, but I did learn one very important thing, that is probably the key to solving them, which is that I definitely need an FBA. I think once I've done that, I'll be fine.

What is the difference between your high bust and your full bust? If its more than a couple of inches, yes you definitely need a full bust adjustment. Colette uses less ease than the big 4 patterns, and she drafts for a C cup rather than a B. keep in mind that your pattern cup size isn't necessarily the same as your actual bra size. In general, you should chose a pattern based on your high bust measurement if you are full busted. This way, you get a pattern that fits your overall frame and can adjust for the bust.

A key way to know you need more fullness in the bust is tight diagonal wrinkles coming up from the hips and pointing to the bust.

If you post pictures of your muslin here, it will be much easier for us to give feedback. Stand straight up and let your arms hang straight. Show front and side view.
