My sister in law is getting married this summer and I want to make a nice cocktail dress for the event. Her colors are royal and lime so I was planning to use a green (probably olive) dupioni. Greens work well with my skin tone, but I'm not planning to use lime as I want a color that I can wear again in other seasons (plus I don't want to be an exact match to the flower arrangements). I think green will be a color that looks nice in the pictures without directly matching the bridal party who will be in royal blue. I've narrowed it down to 4 patterns, but can't seem to decide. Each one has it's pros and cons and I do plan on making a muslin. I have a lot of projects though, so I want to get started sooner rather than later. These are family pictures I have to live with forever, so I'm being a bit more particular than normal

I love this Burda but am concerned the pleats will make the stomach poofy.

I have this Vogue 1032 and am considering it in knee length. I would eliminate the piecing in the bust and probably change the back to a V to match the front

I'm making a more casual version of Vogue 9668 right now, but think view C would really compliment my build. I'm not very boobtacular, so the dress wouldn't be vulgar, since there would not be a large display of bosom

Lastly, I did just order Burda Magazine 12/2008. I love the dress, but worry that the one shoulder neckline will make my already broad shoulders even broader looking.

Any thoughts

I'll vote

Vogue 9668, view C; lovely for the wedding and a timeless classic. Since it complements your build you should absolutely have this dress in your wardrobe.

Disclaimer - I am a mature voter.

I agree with this. I think it's the most classic style, I think it would be very flattering and showcase the fabric nicely. It also looks like it would have few complications/hassles, and if you're anything like me, complications and hassles seem to multiply when a special occasion is involved.

I think that dress, plus some great shoes and jewelry is a winning combo.

(I'm 35 for whatever it's worth )

A 63 yr old vote for Vogue 9668. It also is likely to make up nicely in dupioni which probably won't work for V1032. The other benefit of 9668 is that you are making it now and will have the fitting done.

Wow, three votes for 9668! I admit that I'm a little surprised. I was afraid that with the plunging front and back, it might be seen as a little "much". I absolutely appreciate the reviews from *mature* sewers because I must admit that I'm often offended by what I see younger people wearing to weddings nowdays!

I am making a version of it now, with a long A line skirt, in sari silk (chiffon texture). Unfortunately I didn't muslin the version I'm making now, and it's requiring tons of adjustments for fit (which is quite rare for me). Even though I'll have already made one, I think it will require a muslin to fine tune the fit before cutting the silk for the next version. I am worried that problems seem to multiply when the sewing counts, so I want all issues addressed beforehand! Thanks for your input and please watch my reviews for the finished dressed within the next couple of weeks. You may all change your minds once you see what it looks like on me versus a drawing! haha

Looks the polls are closed but I would vote for the Burda with the star burst. This would look fantastic with a silk dupioni with the irresdecent shine highlighting the pleats. It would add volume but at the hips where an inverted triangle would need it.

Vogue 9668 is also a great choice. For me it's plain. If I'm going to sew for a special occasion I'm going to do something unusual. And then I refashion or repurpose the fabric afterwards.

If you're looking for silk dupioni with lots of color choices I would recommend the silk baron. http://www.silkbaron.com/ Not affiliated. I've bought from him several times.

Polls aren't closed! Normally I'm very decisive, but I have gained great insights from ladies here on PR that have saved previous projects. Since these pictures will be around for a while, I want this to be a well researched project.

I was just looking at Silk Baron but have never ordered from them before. Thanks for the recommendation!

I vote with the majority - for the Vogue dress that you're currently making. You'll have learned a lot about the fitting and have gone through the construction process, so when it's time to make the wedding version, it should be a breeze (she says, optimistically - ). And I think it's the classiest of the lot.

Not disclosing age. Suffice it to say that after this recent birthday, I'm now counting backward.

Another vote for Vogue 9668 (and a very mature vote). The dress has lovely lines.

Vogue 9668, it looks classy, and that is not age limited. It will look lovely on you.
