how to tone down bright color

My problem is that although it is teal blue and beautiful, it it too bright. On my plus sized body I would look like a big blueberry walking into the room. How do I tone down the brightness of this fabric color?

Is there some opportunity for color blocking, maybe? Date: 1/7/13 11:56 AM Whenever I want to tone down brightness, I add some black dye. I usually work with cottons, so I'm not sure if it would work the same on synthetics. Overdyeing is always a game of chance.

Lace, eyelet, cut outs, burn outs etc. Or you can try breaking it up with the waist ties or neck edge in a different color. Can you give us the pattern number? Maybe that'll spur more ideas. If you're planning to wear it with a cardigan, that will also cut down on the amount of blue berriness.

How would I do that? It depends a lot on the type of fabric, if it's mostly cotton or rayon or other natural fiber, then it's easy--most dyes would work; you can even use tea or coffee. If you have polyester, then you need special dyes. There is a lot of info out there on dying various types of fabric, I'd try google and you'll probably know more than you ever need to about it.
