Confessions of a Stashaholic I have a problem!

I'm up to four large plastic bins and have so much I can't keep track of what I have. I also don't want to use my 'good' fabric so it sits in the tub waiting for just the right project. Well I have to make some changes this year or build on to the house. My husband has No idea how much fabric I really have. I'm just saying.....I have a PROBLEM! I'm going to go through and organize it today so I get an idea of what I have on hand. My name is Martha and I am a stashaholic!

Date: 1/7/13 9:36 AM Not sure if misery loves company, but you have to know that you are not alone. Look at the topic Stash Sew Along. It is there for a reason. Someone decided she/he needed to sew the fabric that had piled up. There is even a Stash Contest to address this issue. As for your DH knowing what you have amassed... the extent of most stash is something known only to the one who created the stash and often we lose track of what we have because we have so much. I have a whole closet full plus some. There is a Fabric Fast discussion you can join for support. This one runs 24 Nov 2012 through 28 Nov 2013, but you can join any time. We tell how we avoided a fabric purchase, we each set our own rules for when we can buy fabric. It's a place to go for support in buying less fabric if that is what you feel you should be doing. Best wishes. I spent all day sorting and organizing all the fabric. I now have 5 tubs that are sorted by type of fabric--they are not full and I hope to keep them that way. I'm going to try to buy fabric only if I need it for a class or to go with other material in my stash. Based on what I found that is highly unlikely! I don't think two moves and being in boxes for months helped! I'll check out the discussions--sounds like I'm in good company! Martha

I've recently taken a dive back into my sewing interest and have already collected over 100 yards of "must have" textiles. .... um, and patterns, notions, books ... videos. Oy! Last time around: I bought it - I sewed it - I wore it. That was the cycle. Now - heck, I haven't even plugged my sewing machine or serger in yet. It started this time with "rent a storage building ... call the mover ... paint the room ... " Tomorrow, I'll get all the machines moved in - and Fabulous Fit and bat that dressform til it jiggles like my reality. Then it'll be back to a fabric store because what I (conveniently) forgot to get was any interfacing. Just not ready to join the Fabric Fast yet ... still too much gorgeous woven stuff out there I want to "stash". Humming "She Works Hard For The Money" is losing it's charm with the husband, kids and dogs so I got a big PO Box for deliveries. Which reminds me ... I still have these unfilled lists to order from Sawyer Brooks and The Cloth Merchants! -- Edited on 1/7/13 10:56 PM --

Date: 1/7/13 11:06 PM I wish my stash was only four bins!LOL I keep buying so it obviously doesn't bother me. Although I will admit that at one point I was feeling overwhelmed by the amount of fabric. Thanks to a sewing binge that started last summer and is still going I've managed to whittle it down to an amount that I'm comfortable with. Debbie

LOL Why didn't I think of that! Actually my stash is not that big...it's still contained in one closet, but I'm going to keep that in mind!

Date: 1/8/13 4:39 AM I have read all sorts of way people sort and store their stash but have not seen the way I do. I sort my fabrics, regardless of colour and fabric type by season. I live in a northern climate which gets hot in the summer so it is the most logical way that works for me. There are, of course, cross seasons, so I store fabrics for tanks and tops with my summer fabric. I keep baskets for ongoing or immediate projects and one for mending, fitting, etc. I haven't counted my big bins. I am afraid to. My daughter is going to help me pack to move to an apartment this year and she declared up front most ( no) will have to go. We shall see. I also have quilting stash and it seems too many boxes of notions. I have thinned out 1/2 of those.

It makes me really think before anymore. Plus I have now used 3 items to make things instead of buying more. Or at least cut out the patterns to make them! ------ re-living my youth through sewing...

Date: 1/8/13 6:23 AM I'm not sure 4 bins is a huge problem in the grand scheme of horrific stashers on here. I had to laugh about not using the 'good fabric". Add to that my requirement of the choice for it must match the yardage ie. never use 1 yard of a 5 yard piece,etc. as that might mess it up for a larger project. Many of us have this problem you described and the older we get the worse it becomes as the golden stash doesn't look like clutter like other household junk that we might send packing. Lol!
