Monograming 1 or 2 initials?

I want to monogram jewelry pouches, totes and casserole/cake carriers and my question is.... How many initials do you do on yours? Just the person's first name initial or is it the last initial or both? I only see the ones with groom, bride and their last name for a total of 3. What would you think is a nice look.

If it's something the world will see like a bag or carrier I'd go with just the last initial.

The large letter in the middle pretty much require 3 letters (not 2). For something like a collar or cuff, 2 or 3, but for something personal (like a pillow or throw) for my family I might just use the first initial. For a tote, I'd probably go with either a really large first initial or small and use 2 or 3. And for something like a casserole cover, I might want an entire name (either first or last) so it would come back to me! Unless it was for my niece - they both have really long first names, lol. -- Edited on 1/7/13 4:19 PM --

Since she has kept her maiden name, I have 2 completely different sets of initials to contend with. Any ideas how to avoid monograms that look like alphabet soup?

You don't have to tell her what you're making, but next time you get the chance just ask if something was going to be personalized for them, would she want both sets of separate initials, or would she want the more traditional monogram with DS's last initial and both of their first initials. I guess it really depends on why she kept her last name. There are so many different reasons, and some women are ok with the more traditional monogram even if they didn't change their name, and some are not. I would ask, even if hypothetically, like you're asking her advice for a gift for someone else. That way, no misunderstandings can arise ETA, also possible, is to do two items with one monogram on each. Two pillowcases, one with hers, one with his. Not saying someone will take claim of a carrier, but definitely something to think about for those few. I also have some with really long first names so, I don't think that would work for them But, I could do a few that way.

My DD asked me to make some monogrammed scarves for her friends. She purchased the scarves from Target, and I monogrammed them. I had her look over the fonts I had, and she picked one. However, when I showed her what it would look like in the embroidery software (3 initials, large in middle), she said Oh No, I want it to look like a circle. Ah Ha! Glad I didn't waste time and scarves only to disappoint. So, instead of trying to skew the letters myself, I quickly found a place online that sold the exact design pack I was seeking. Whew! I love that look too, so it wasn't a waste or too much money.
